Understanding MPO Polarity as it relates to end to end fiber links: To understand the polarity of an MPO cable, you must first start with the key on the MPO connector. Each mPo connector will have a keying feature that will govern the polarity on an end to end link. When installing MPO cables, the key can be oriented in a key up/Key up or Key up/Key Down configuration. In the below image you will notice the Key feature on the MPO connector highlighted in orange. When MPO connectors are installed in a Key up position, the fibers in the MT ferrule will be 1-12 and from left to right in ascending order as seen below. When the MPO is installed in a Key Down position, the fiber path is inverted to 12-1 or from left to right in a descending order as shown below.

The next image will outline a Key Up/Key Up configuration. With this orientation the fiber path will be as follows, fiber 1 on connector A will be aligned with fiber 12 on connector B. In this example below, we will see the Key Up/Key Down orientation where fiber 1 on connector A is aligned with fiber 1 on connector B. Understanding fiber path and alignment is crucial when designing in MPO/MTP cables as this will dictate the signal path from end point to end point.
