Alumina Type ZAL-45AA is composed of 97% Al2O3 and 3% SiO2, with no organic content. It has a density of 0.72 g/cc (45 pcf) and can withstand continuous temperatures up to 1550°C (2822°F) and intermittent temperatures over 1600°C (2880°F). The material has a melting point of 1870°C (3392°F) and an open porosity of 70%. Its compressive strength at 10% compression is 3.4 MPa (500 psi), and flexural strength at 10% strain is 2.1 MPa (300 psi). Linear shrinkage is 2% at 1500°C and 6% at 1600°C. The thermal expansion coefficient from room temperature to 1000°C is 7.5x10^-6/°C.

General Information
ZAL-45AA is a high-density, high-strength refractory structure made from high-alpha polycrystalline alumina fibers and high-purity alumina binders. It is highly machinable, exhibits high electrical resistivity, and is transparent to microwave and RF at elevated temperatures. The material is pre-fired, contains no organic binders, and is resistant to chemical attack, except by hydrofluoric acid, phosphoric acid, and strong alkalis.

Thermal Conductivity
Thermal conductivity values range from 0.16 W/m°K at 250°C to 0.43 W/m°K at 1650°C.

Suggested Applications
ZAL-45AA is suitable for thermal insulation in bright annealing furnaces, supports in hot Solid Oxide Fuel Cells, backup insulation in high-temperature furnaces, and electrical insulation in systems up to 1550°C. It is also used in applications involving molten non-ferrous metals where SiO2 must be avoided.

Availability
Standard boards are available in various sizes, with custom shapes and surface treatments also offered. Standard tolerances are +/- 1/8” on length and width and +/- 1/16” on thickness.
