Product catalog summary
General Information
ZIRCAR Ceramics’ Alumina Type ZAL-15 is a low-density, rigid refractory structure made from high-alpha polycrystalline alumina fibers and high-purity inorganic binders. It is an excellent thermal insulator with precision machinability, suitable for continuous use up to 1550°C (2822°F) and intermittent use up to 1650°C (3002°F). ZAL-15 is characterized by high electrical resistivity, transparency in microwave and RF fields, and high reflectance. It is resistant to chemical attack but can be affected by hydrofluoric acid, phosphoric acid, and strong alkalis.
Characteristics & Properties
  • Composition: 85% Al2O3, 15% SiO2
  • Density: 0.24 g/cc (15 pcf)
  • Maximum Use Temperature: Continuous 1550°C (2822°F), Intermittent 1650°C (3002°F)
  • Linear Shrinkage: 1% at 1550°C, 3% at 1650°C
  • Thermal Expansion Coefficient: 5.0 x 10-6/°C
  • Melting Point: 1870°C (3392°F)

  • Flexural Strength: 1.6 MPa at 25% Strain
  • Thermal Conductivity: Ranges from 0.06 W/m°K at 250°C to 0.25 W/m°K at 1350°C
Suggested Applications
ZAL-15 is recommended for use as thermal insulation in furnaces and thermal process systems, precision-machined insulation in scientific instruments, reflector tiles in infrared equipment, high-temperature setters, supports, process fixtures, and electrical insulation in high-temperature systems.
Availability
Standard boards are available in various sizes and can be ordered online or specified by item number. Custom boards and shapes are also available, with options for surface treatments such as rigidization or coating.
Ordering Information
Standard boards are available for immediate shipment, with tolerances of +/- 1/8” on length and width and +/- 1/16” on thickness. Custom shapes and sizes can be manufactured using advanced machining techniques.
