Alumina Type CRYSTAL-18 is composed of 65% Al2O3 and 35% SiO2, with a density of 0.29 g/cc. It exhibits low linear shrinkage at high temperatures, ranging from 0.75% at 1300°C to 1.20% at 1500°C. The material has a compressive strength of 0.37 MPa and a cold bending strength of 1.60 MPa. Its specific heat is 920 J/kg K, and thermal conductivity increases with temperature, from 0.12 W/m K at 400°C to 0.5 W/m K at 1600°C.
General Information
CRYSTAL-18 is a vacuum-formed product made from polycrystalline alumina fiber and refractory binders. It is known for low thermal conductivity, good strength, and high thermal shock resistance, suitable for continuous use up to 1550°C. CRYSTAL-18A contains organic binders, while CRYSTAL-18B is organic-free. The material is resistant to chemical attack but can be affected by hydrofluoric acid, phosphoric acid, and strong alkalis.

Alumina Type CRYSTAL-18 General Information ZIRCAR Ceramics’ Aumina Type CRYSTAL-18 insulating boards, cylinders and custom shapes are vacuum-formed combinations of polycrystalline (PCW) alumina fiber, high-purity Refractory Ceramic Fiber (RCF) and refractory binders. CRYSTAL-18 exhibits low thermal conductivity, good strength, superior thermal shock resistance and high dimensional stability in applications with continuous temperatures to 1550oC (2822oF). CRYSTAL-18A is dried and contains a few wt% organic binder. CRYSTAL-18B has been prefired and is organic-free. CRYSTAL-18 exhibits an open-pore structure which readily accepts surface rigidizations or coating with ceramic adhesives. Such surface treatments enhance CRYSTAL-18’s strength and handleability for use in MoSi2 Heating Element Assemblies and other advanced systems. CRYSTAL-18 shows excellent resistance to chemical attack and is not affected by oil or water. It is, however, affected by hydrofluoric acid, phosphoric acid and strong alkalis.
