Product catalog summary
General Information: ZIRCAR Ceramics' Alumina-Silica Insulation Type AXL is a strong, rigid refractory structure made from high-purity refractory ceramic fibers and inorganic colloidal silica binders. It offers low thermal conductivity and excellent thermal shock resistance, suitable for continuous use at temperatures up to 1260°C (2300°F). The material is characterized by a rigid exterior and less bound interior, and it can be machined into custom shapes. It is resistant to oil and water but can be attacked by certain acids and alkalis.
Characteristics & Properties: The material is white to tan with light brown areas, composed of 38% Al2O3 and 62% SiO2, with no organics. It has a bulk density of 0.28 g/cc and a maximum use temperature of 1260°C. Linear shrinkage is 1.8% at 1000°C and 2.5% at 1200°C. Thermal conductivity varies with temperature, and it has specific flexural and compressive strengths.
Availability of Standard Boards: Standard boards are available in sizes such as 24”W x 36”L with thicknesses of 1”, 2”, and 3”. Custom boards and shapes can also be manufactured, including cylinders and complex forms. Surface treatments and bonded assemblies are available.
Suggested Applications: AXL is used as primary and backup thermal insulation in furnaces, for molten metal contact applications, in semiconductor processing, and as electrical insulation in high-temperature systems. It is also used in hot appliances and scientific equipment.
Ordering Information: Standard boards can be ordered online or by specifying the quantity and item number. Custom shapes and tighter tolerances are available through additional machining and drying processes.

Alumina-Silica Type AXL General Information ZIRCAR Ceramics’ Alumina-Silica Insulation Type AXL is a strong, rigid refractory structure of high-purity refractory ceramic fibers (RCF) and high-purity inorganic Colloidal (Amorphous) Silica binders. AXL offers low thermal conductivity, excellent thermal shock resistance and is an effective thermal insulator in numerous thermal process systems with continuous operating temperatures of 1260°C (2300°F). Unique to this type of material is its rigid, almost crusty outer surfaces with its much less bound interiors. AXL is frequently machined or cut into custom configurations. In applications where a strong exterior is desired AXL’s original exterior hardness can be easily restored with the use of ZIRCAR Ceramics’ Silica Rigidizer Type SI-RIG. AXL contains no organic binders and produces no smoke or odor when heated. It is unaffected by oil or water. It is, however, attacked by hydrofluoric acid, phosphoric acid and strong alkalis. Characteristics & Properties Color The data presented herein is intended to help the user to determine the appropriateness of this material for their application. This data is a nominal representation of this product’s properties and characteristics and therefore should not be used in preparing specifications. * Maximum use temperature is dependent on variables such as stresses, both thermal and mechanical, and the chemical environment that the material experiences. ** Properties expressed parallel to thickness. f Properties expressed perpendicular to thickness.
