Overview of Pyrolytic Boron Nitride (PBN):
Pyrolytic Boron Nitride (PBN) is a hexagonal boron nitride produced through a chemical vapor deposition (CVD) process. This process results in a solid form where all boron nitride crystals grow parallel to the deposition surface. Due to the nature of the CVD process, PBN components typically do not exceed a thickness of 3 mm. PBN is known for its high purity, with a typical purity level of 99.99%. The CVD process gives PBN an almost perfect layered structure, providing anisotropic thermal conductivity, making it an ideal material for manufacturing crucibles used in crystal growth.
Features of PBN:- PBN has a color between ivory and orange-brown, is non-toxic, and easy to process.
- It achieves a purity of 99.99%, with a dense surface and good gas barrier properties.
- Strength increases with temperature, peaking at 2200°C.
- Resistant to acids, alkalis, salts, and organic reagents, and does not react with most molten metals or semiconductor materials.
- Exhibits excellent thermal shock resistance, thermal conductivity, and a low thermal expansion coefficient.
- High resistance, high dielectric strength, low dielectric constant, low loss rate, and excellent microwave and infrared capabilities.
- Possesses anisotropic mechanical, thermal, and electrical properties.
Applications:- Crystal growth crucibles (VGF, LEC crucibles)
- Molecular beam epitaxy (MBE) crucibles
- PBN infrared windows
- Traveling wave tubes (TWT) support rods
- MOCVD heaters
- PBN-coated graphite
- High-temperature vacuum equipment insulators
