SVFL2800S SERIES

Product catalog summary
Overview: The SVFL2800S Series is a line of space-qualified hybrid DC-DC converters designed for harsh radiation environments in space applications. These converters are characterized for Total Ionizing Dose (TID) and Single Event Effects (SEE) and are suitable for use in various orbits and deep space missions.
Specifications: The converters offer a wide input voltage range from 16 V to 40 V, with a transient capability of up to 50 V. They provide a single output of 3.3 V, 5 V, 12 V, or 15 V with up to 120 W output power. The devices operate over a temperature range of -55 °C to +125 °C without power derating.
Features: Key features include low output noise, the ability to parallel up to five units with current sharing, output voltage trimming, and protection mechanisms such as undervoltage lockout and current limit protection. The converters use a radiation-immune magnetic feedback circuit and do not employ optoisolators.
Space Level Characterizations: The converters are guaranteed for TID performance up to 30 krad(Si) and SEE performance to 44 MeV-cm2/mg. They are qualified to MIL-PRF-38534 Class H and Class K standards.
Manufacturing and Compliance: The converters are manufactured in facilities compliant with MIL-PRF-38534 and ISO-9001 standards. They meet MIL-STD-461 C/D/E/F when used with appropriate EMI filters.
Packaging: The converters are housed in a low-profile, hermetic metal case with a standard industry pinout. They are available in standard and optional side-flanged versions.
Performance Specifications: The converters exhibit high efficiency, with typical values ranging from 67% to 85% depending on the model and conditions. They support capacitive loads up to 1000 µF and have a switching frequency range of 425 kHz to 600 kHz.
Technical Notes: The SVFL2800S Series uses an isolated, single output, forward converter topology with magnetic feedback. It does not require external components for operation, though additional output capacitance can be added to meet specific ripple requirements. The converters can be configured for positive or negative output voltages and can be stacked for higher voltage outputs.
Function Descriptions: The converters feature on/off control via INH1 and INH2 pins, allowing for output inhibition and enabling. The output voltage can be adjusted using the TRIM pin, with a range of -20% to +10% from nominal.
Specifications and Adjustments: The document provides a table for adjusting the output voltage (+Vout) of the VFL2815S series using specific resistor values (Rtrim). The table lists various output voltages and their corresponding resistor values needed for trimming.
Remote Sense: Remote sensing compensates for voltage drops by regulating directly at the load. It can handle up to a 10% voltage drop. If not used, +S should be connected to +VOUT and -S to OUTCOM.
Frequency Synchronization: The SVFL2800S Series operates at a default frequency of 525 kHz. It includes SYNCIN and SYNCOUT pins for frequency synchronization, which is optional unless system constraints require it. Proper layout is necessary to prevent noise interference.
Parallel Operation: The SHARE function allows for active current sharing among parallel modules. Proper physical arrangement and symmetrical layout improve accuracy. Frequency synchronization is not required for parallel operation.
Protection Features:
  • Input Undervoltage Lockout: Prevents operation below a certain input voltage, ensuring controlled startup.
  • Output Soft Start: Controls output ramp-up to prevent overshoot and limit inrush current, with a rise time of approximately 4 ms.
  • Output Overcurrent Protection: Limits output current to 125% of its rated value during overload conditions, with automatic recovery.
Thermal Considerations: The converter is rated for full power at 125°C, with derating required above this temperature. It is designed for conduction cooling via the baseplate.
Radiation Hardness Assurance (RHA): VPT's RHA plan ensures product performance in space environments, covering TID, SEE, and ELDRS. Detailed reports and testing procedures are outlined for radiation exposure and component stress analysis.
Environmental Screening: Products are tested per MIL-STD-883 and MIL-PRF-38534 standards. Various tests include bond pull, visual inspections, temperature cycling, and hermeticity checks.
Ordering Information: The document provides a breakdown of the ordering code for the SVFL2800S Series, detailing product series, input/output voltage, package options, and screening codes.
Engineering Models Usage: The document specifies that certain models are intended solely for low volume engineering characterization and are not compliant for flight use. Customers must acknowledge this limitation in their purchase orders for engineering models.
