Overview: The BEI Sensors MX21 INSTA-MOUNT™ Series is a modular incremental rotary optical encoder designed for quick installation and reliable performance. It operates effectively without stringent controls on shaft endplay, runout, or perpendicularity, and is suitable for motor manufacturers and high-volume OEMs.
Specifications:
  • Mechanical: Weighs approximately 2.1 oz with a moment of inertia of 2.6 x 10-5 oz in sec2. Shaft tolerance is nominal -0.0002”/-0.0007” with a minimum length of 0.56”.
  • Electrical: Operates at 5 volts ±5% with a maximum of 80mA. Offers dual channel quadrature outputs with optional index and complements.
  • Environmental: Operating temperature range is -10°C to +70°C, with storage capabilities from -40°C to +125°C.
  • Termination: Available with 28 AWG flat ribbon cable or shielded round cable.
Installation Procedure:
  1. Ensure the motor shaft is free of defects and not rotating during installation.
  2. Align the encoder perpendicular to the motor shaft and push it straight on.
  3. Install mount screws without fully tightening, apply thread sealant.
  4. Rotate the motor shaft at a minimum of 300 RPM, press and release the air-gap button.
  5. Fully tighten the mounting screws to 30-40 ounce inches.
Removal Procedure:
  1. The motor shaft can be stationary or rotating up to 1000 RPM.
  2. Remove the mounting screws and pull the encoder straight off.
Ordering Options: Model numbers are constructed based on output format, index option, electrical termination, bore size, and pulses per revolution (PPR).
Additional Information: The encoder is short circuit protected and features a frequency response graph for performance analysis. Color codes for wiring are provided for installation ease.
