Linear Encoders
Traditionally, optical glass scale encoders were used for high accuracy. However, magnetic and inductive encoders now offer significant advantages, such as durability, non-contact sensing, and better integration with Velmex UniSlide and BiSlide Assemblies.

Comparison of Linear Encoders
  • AMO Inductive Encoder: Offers 0.001 mm resolution, 0.010 mm/meter accuracy, and 0.001 mm repeatability with a head-to-scale clearance of 0.15 mm. It provides accuracy comparable to glass scale encoders and is impervious to dirt and liquids.
  • ELGO Magnetic Encoder: Provides 0.001 mm resolution, 0.025 mm/100mm accuracy, and 0.001 mm repeatability with a head-to-scale clearance of 2.5 mm. It is more economical for long travel lengths but less accurate than inductive or glass scale encoders.

Rotary Encoders
Rotary encoders measure rotational distance on leadscrews or motor shafts. The resolution per revolution is four times the cycles per revolution (CPR). EPC differential encoders are preferred for their durability and reliability, while HEDS modular encoders offer a low-cost alternative for less demanding applications.

Ultra-Precision Measurement System Linear and Rotary Encoders Linear Encoders Linear encoders provide the highest measurement accuracy possible. Since linear encoders measure distance directly, leadscrew accuracy and backlash are not a factor in the measurement system. Rotary Encoders Rotary encoders are a cost effective method to measure rotational distance on a leadscrew or motor shaft. Several cycles per rev (CPR) options and shaft bores are available. The resolution per rev is equal to 4x the CPR. For example: 400 CPR = 1600 increments of resolution per revolution.
