Product catalog summary
Company Overview
Velan is a prominent manufacturer of industrial steel valves, including gate, globe, check, ball, butterfly, and knife gate valves, used in critical applications across industries such as chemical, petrochemical, oil and gas, and power generation. Founded in 1950, Velan is renowned for supplying forged valves to nuclear power plants and the U.S. Navy, operating 12 specialized manufacturing plants globally, with a strong presence in North America.
Product Specifications
Velan provides a variety of valves for delayed coker applications, including four-way switch valves, isolation valves, and high-pressure water valves. These are available in different sizes and pressure classes, designed to endure high temperatures and pressures, made from high-temperature alloys like C12 and C5, with WCB options for lower temperatures.
Design and Features
Velan's valves feature robust designs with single 90° rotary motion for reliable actuation, sturdy bellows for constant ball-to-seat contact, scraper type seats to prevent coke buildup, and steam purges to keep valve cavities coke-free, ensuring durability and minimal maintenance.
Applications and Installations
Velan's delayed coker valves are installed in over 121 units worldwide, with more than 235 four-way switch valves and 1350 isolation valves in operation, used in applications like inlet transfer lines, bypass, drain, and quench. Velan also provides logic control panels for safe valve operation.
Advantages
Velan valves offer advantages such as extensive experience with over 700 valves installed globally, reliable automation with simple actuation mechanisms, positive sealing throughout the valve's life, and a lightweight, compact design for easy installation.
Conclusion
Velan continues to innovate, providing high-quality valve solutions for critical industrial applications, ensuring safety, reliability, and efficiency.
Overview
Specializing in delayed coker applications for over 20 years, Velan focuses on enhancing valve performance through user feedback, leading to design improvements aligned with evolving coker trends.
Key Features and Innovations
  • Automation: Fully automated and interlocked valve operations for safer drum switching and unheading, with remote operation capabilities.
  • Process Debottlenecking: Full bore valves designed for higher throughput and lower pressure drops, enhancing profitability, with innovations like the patented Ring Valve for backpressure control.
  • Shorter Cycles: Valves optimized for shorter cycle times, addressing thermal stresses and water hammer issues.
  • Special Applications: Solutions for needle coke applications.
  • In-Line Cleaning: Valves can be decoked without removal, improving maintenance efficiency.
Performance and Reliability
Examples of reliability include a 12" Switch Valve in service for 7 years and 24" full bore overhead vapor valves in service for over 6 years, with newer units adopting larger overhead lines using Velan's 30" valves.

AUTOMATION The Stem Coupling is designed to perform 3 mainfunctions: The electric, hydraulic or pneumatic actuator isselected in function of coker service. A large torque safety factor ensures the valve will cycle under the most stringent conditions. When selecting actuators, special attention is paid to the coker deck environment. ❏ > Protect against "overtorquing" of the stem. ❏ > Protect the actuator components. The adjacent photograph shows a 12" switch valve installed with the stem in the horizontal position. The valve is installed in a delayed coker unit, where the valves were interlocked...

The valves shown in the adjacent photograph were installed as part of a debottleneck project aimed, among other things, at increasing the units liquid yield. As this was an existing structure it was important to minimize piping changes. Because the existing valves were 70% plug valves the engineering firm evaluated full bore plug valves, but found the unitsҒ weights to be substantially higher. Rather than evaluate the structural changes required in order to accept these heavier, larger units the end user opted to use our lighter full bore ball valves. As a bonus, the ball valves provided a better...

This patented Velan Ring Valve was installed to replace an existing butterfly valve. The end user required the use of this valve only when shorter cycle times required quicker drum "backwarming". The end user could not justify the high pressure drop across the butterfly valve with his efforts to increase liquid yield. They required a valve with good throttling characteristics, but which provided no obstruction in the full open position. The Ring Valve fully met these requirements. > Showingposition ofmaximumpressuredrop NO OBSTRUCTION (HIGH CV) in the full openposition. EXCELLENT THROTTLING CHARACTERISTICS....
