Product catalog summary
Measuring Principle
Guided Wave Radar technology utilizes high-frequency microwave pulses guided along a probe to measure liquid levels. The time taken for the pulse to travel to the liquid surface and back determines the distance. This method is reliable across various applications as it is unaffected by density fluctuations, steam, pressure, or temperature changes, and is suitable for low dielectric constants.
Type Overview
The VEGAFLEX series includes models 81, 83, and 86, each designed for specific applications with different probe types (cable, rod, coax). VEGAFLEX 81 is versatile for general use, VEGAFLEX 83 is ideal for aggressive or hygienic environments, and VEGAFLEX 86 is tailored for high-temperature applications. Each model supports multiple signal outputs and has specific process fitting and temperature/pressure ranges.
Instrument Selection
VEGAFLEX instruments are chosen based on application needs, such as vessel type and process conditions. They are suitable for level measurement in conical vessels, standpipes, or bypass tubes. Interface measurement is possible by adjusting instrument settings, making them ideal for measuring oil or solvents on water.
Mounting and Adjustment
Proper mounting is crucial to avoid contact with vessel walls or installations. Short sockets are recommended to minimize dead bands. Adjustments can be made using tools like PLICSCOM and PACTware to ensure accurate measurements.
Safety and Approvals
VEGAFLEX instruments come with various approvals, including ATEX and IEC, ensuring compliance with safety standards for hazardous areas. Users must adhere to specific safety instructions and regulations for Ex applications.
Specifications and Installation Guidelines
The document provides detailed specifications and installation guidelines for VEGAFLEX guided wave radar instruments used for level and interface measurement in liquids. It emphasizes the importance of proper installation, particularly in non-metallic vessels, where a metallic surface is required for accurate measurement. For ammonia applications, a special gas-tight version with high-resistant seals is available.
Applications and Instrument Selection
The VEGAFLEX instruments are suitable for various applications, including steam boilers, autoclaves, and environments with aggressive liquids. The document outlines the selection criteria for different VEGAFLEX models (81, 83, 86) based on vessel type, process conditions, and industry requirements. It highlights the suitability of each model for specific conditions such as high temperatures, pressures, and hygienic applications.
Mounting and Measurement
Mounting examples illustrate the use of VEGAFLEX sensors in storage vessels, food processing tanks, and bypass tubes. The sensors provide accurate measurements regardless of product characteristics like density, temperature, or foam presence. The document also discusses the advantages of using guided microwaves in various industrial settings.
Electronics and Connectivity
The electronics section covers the configuration and connection of VEGAFLEX instruments using 4-20 mA/HART, Profibus PA, and Foundation Fieldbus protocols. It provides details on voltage supply, cable requirements, and grounding practices to ensure reliable operation. The document emphasizes the importance of using screened cables in environments with high electromagnetic interference.
Conclusion

Measuring principle 1 Measuring principle Measuring principle High frequency microwave pulses are coupled onto a cable or rod and guided along the probe. The pulse is reflected by the product surface. The time from emission to reception of the signals is proportional to the distance of the level. The instrument is supplied with the probe length (0 % and 100 %) already adjusted. In most cases setup on site is not required. In any case, you set up VEGAFLEX without medium. The shortenable, bare cable and rod versions can be simply adapted to the local requirements, if necessary. Level measurement...
