Introduction to UV-Oxidation for Environmental Contaminant Treatment

Understanding Environmental Contaminants
Environmental contaminants are harmful chemicals found in soil, air, and water, originating from human activities like industrial manufacturing and natural sources such as algae blooms. Key contaminants include taste and odor-causing compounds, NDMA, pharmaceuticals, pesticides, VOCs, and algal toxins.

Why Use UV for Treatment?
UV disinfection is a cost-effective method for treating certain contaminants that cannot be fully addressed by other technologies. It eliminates residuals by breaking down contaminants into safe components, unlike other methods that transfer contaminants to different phases.

UV-Oxidation Process
UV-Oxidation involves UV light and hydrogen peroxide to create hydroxyl radicals that react with contaminants. This process, along with UV-photolysis, effectively breaks down contaminants.

Solutions for Emerging Needs
TrojanUVPhox™, TrojanUVSwift™ECT, and TrojanUVTorrent™ECT are advanced UV systems designed for efficient contaminant treatment. These systems are optimized for large-scale applications, providing disinfection and contaminant destruction without forming hazardous by-products.

Case Studies
Drinking Water Solution: Facilities in Pennsylvania use TrojanUVSwift ECT systems to treat taste and odor issues caused by algal blooms.
Water Reuse Solution: The Orange County Water District expanded its treatment capacity using TrojanUVPhox reactors to address contaminants like NDMA and 1,4-dioxane.
Groundwater Remediation: In San Gabriel Valley, UV-oxidation effectively treats 1,4-dioxane in contaminated groundwater.

Trojan Technologies: A Leader in UV Solutions
Trojan Technologies offers comprehensive UV treatment solutions for various stages of water use, recognized for innovations in UV water treatment technology. With a global presence, Trojan continues to lead in providing effective solutions for microbial and chemical contamination.

What are Environmental Contaminants? There is a growing need to protect the world’s water supply from potentially harmful chemicals. Recent research has shown that a wide variety of such chemicals exist at trace concentrations in streams, lakes, rivers, and in groundwater throughout the world. A Growing List of Environmental Contaminants: • Taste and odor-causing compounds (e.g. geosmin and MIB) • N-nitrosodimethylamine (NDMA) • harmaceuticals and personal care P products (PPCPs) • Pesticides and herbicides • ,4-Dioxane 1 The term “environmental contaminants” refers to harmful chemicals present...

How UV Treats Environmental Contaminants UV-Photolysis is a photochemical reaction that takes place when a contaminant molecule absorbs UV light. The photons break down chemical bonds of the molecule and reduce the potentially harmful chemical to its safe, elemental components. UV-Oxidation is also a photochemical reaction, but involves the irradiation of hydrogen peroxide with UV light. This creates strongly oxidizing hydroxyl radicals that oxidize the contaminant, breaking the bonds between the molecules, and reducing the potentially harmful chemical to its safe, elemental components. Simultaneous...
