High-purity silicon is often used for both wafers and semiconductor processing components to avoid particle or contamination. Columnar crystal silicon is available in large sizes. It also has an advantage in mechanical strength over a wide range of temperatures. Moreover, the machinability of columnar crystal silicon is better than that of singlecrystal silicon, and can be machined with less chipping and cracking.

Machining Examples Tantalum is characterized by its high density, extremely high melting point (3,017°C), and excellent corrosion resistance. In contrast to other refractory metals such as tungsten and molybdenum, tantalum has good ductility and machinability compared to other refractory metals. Despite all of these advantages of tantalum, however, applications are often limited to small parts/components due to its high cost.
