TIMKEN® ECOTURN® SEAL

TIMKEN® ECOTURN® SEAL

Product catalog summary
Introduction
The document discusses the impact of bearing seals on railcar performance and operational costs, focusing on the Timken® EcoTurn® seal, which is designed to enhance performance and reduce environmental impact.
Specifications and Design
The Timken EcoTurn® seal is engineered to offer almost zero torque, significantly reducing fuel consumption and emissions. It minimizes hot-box set-outs, temperature trending removals, and grease weepage while providing water-exclusion capabilities throughout the wheel's life. The seal features a one-piece molded elastomer design with a tortuous non-contacting labyrinth path to retain grease and expel contaminants.
Performance and Testing
The EcoTurn seal enhances Timken® AP-2 Class K and AP Class F rail bearing assemblies by eliminating virtually all seal-generated torque. It has been tested using the Association of American Railroads (AAR) M959 standard procedures, outperforming competitors in water exclusion and maintaining low torque and temperature over 100,000 service miles.
Environmental and Economic Benefits
For rail freight applications, the EcoTurn seal reduces operating torque by approximately 20 inch-pounds per bearing, saving over 13,500 gallons of fuel annually for a 100-car train and reducing emissions by four tons. This is equivalent to removing 240 automobiles from the road.
Operational Advantages
The EcoTurn seal reduces the likelihood of hot-box set-outs by maintaining the lowest average operating torque and temperature compared to competitors. It requires no wear-in period, consistently providing low torque and temperature without degrading over the wheel's life.
Conclusion
Timken is a leader in reducing emissions and operating temperatures for rail customers globally. For more information, contact a local Timken representative or visit their website.

TIMKEN® ECOTURN® SEAL-1

The Timken EcoTurn® labyrinth seal enhances the Timken® AP-2 Class K and AP Class F rail bearing assemblies. This patent-pending seal contains no rubbing surfaces, thus eliminating virtually all seal-generated torque. Almost zero torque means less power needed and less fuel burned. The bearings run cooler, last longer and can require less maintenance than bearings equipped with competing seal designs. The EcoTurn seal proved superior at keeping water out of the bearing assembly and consistently outperformed the competitor's premium low-torque seal when tested by Timken utilizing the Association of American Railroads (AAR) M959 standard testing procedures for the equivalent of 100,000 service miles (161,000 km). The EcoTurn seal also exceeded the M959 water-exclusion requirements. ECOTURN SEAL IS DESIGNED TO: • Offer almost zero torque, which can save thousands of gallons of fuel annually and reduce emissions by several tons per year* • Reduce hot-box set-outs • Minimize temperature trending removals • Provide water-exclusion capabilities for the duration of the wheel life • Decrease grease weepage • Reduce water etching and corrosion *Based on a 100-car train traveling 100,000 miles (161,000 km) annually NO DIRECT WATER INGRESS PATH DEEP TROUGH REDIRECTS CONTAMINANTS TORTUROUS NON-CONTACTING LABYRINTH PATH DESIGNED TO RETAIN GREASE AND EXPEL CONTAMINANTS ONE-PIECE MOLDED ELASTOMER DESIGN CURL OVERHANG IMPROVES GREASE RETENTION
