M9 Modular Magnetic Encoder

Product catalog summary
Overview
Timken's magnetic encoder technology offers significant operational and cost advantages over other technologies. The M9 Modular Magnetic Encoder is highlighted as a superior sensing solution, providing reliable speed and position data even in harsh environments.

M9 Modular Magnetic Encoder Features
  • Durability: Operates effectively in extreme temperatures up to 125º C, 40º C higher than comparable optical encoders. It features a differential magnetic sensor circuit design that protects against magnetic field interference and can withstand intense shock loads and vibration.
  • Design: Utilizes on-chip Hall Effect signals for high-resolution quadrature output, capable of up to 1000PPR. It supports microstepping small stepper motors and high-speed servomotors with a data rate of 800KHz, allowing up to 12,000 RPM at 1000PPR. The off-axis technology enhances accuracy, and the magnetic target aids in shaft-positioning alignment.
  • Customization: Timken engineers can tailor the encoder's electronic and physical configurations to meet specific needs, enhancing function and performance.

Advantages of Magnetic Encoders
  • Resistant to liquid or solid particulate interference.
  • High accuracy with less than 10 arc minutes deviation.
  • Compact, low-cost, and rugged design.
  • Customizable for replacement parts or new designs.
  • No moving parts, enhancing durability.

Specifications
  • Mechanical: Bore sizes range from 0.125 in. to 5 mm, with a maximum speed of 12,000 RPM and a weight of 10 g.
  • Electrical: Options include open collector or line driver, with resolutions from 100 to 1000 PPR. The supply voltage is 5VDC +/- 10%, with current requirements of 39mA.
  • Environmental: Temperature range from -40º C to 125º C, with an enclosure rating of IP40 and RoHS compliance.

M9 Modular Magnetic Encoder-1

The Timken® M9 - the smallest off-axis magnetic encoder on the market - provides a high-resolution, reliable solution offering exceptional operation in tough conditions, long life, easy installation and consistent performance Durable The M9 performs remarkably well in extremes of temperature, with a limit of 125° C which is 40° C higher than most optical encoders this size. Its differential magnetic sensor circuit design protects from magnetic field interference while its larger sensor gap allows it to sustain intense shock loads and vibration. The M9 encoder handles a wider range of shaft-end play and run-out than modular optical encoders. Design The Timken M9 produces on-chip Hall Effect signals to create high resolution quadrature output that determines speed and direction. The M9 is capable of up to 1000PPR and is available with index pulse and line driver. It's ideal for microstepping small stepper motors or for small, high speed servomotors. 800KHz data rate allows up to 12,000 RPM at 1000PPR. Off-axis technology provides accuracy not available in on axis magnetic encoders. The magnetic target is marked for shaftpositioning alignment. Air gap tolerance makes installation quick and easy. Its differential magnetic sensor circuit design protects from magnetic field interference while its larger sensor gap allows it to sustain intense shock loads and vibration. The M9 encoder handles a wider range of shaft-end play and run-out than modular optical encoders. Customized Solutions Timken application engineers create products designed to meet your unique needs. By tailoring the encoder's electronic and physical configurations, the Timken team enhances function and performance to supply a reliable and durable solution. Why Magnetic Encoders? • Highly resistant to liquid or solid particulate in gap between sensor and target • Polymer-bonded multi-pole magnets • High accuracy - less than 10 arc minutes • Compact, low-cost and rugged • Can be customized as a replacement part or to fit new designs • No moving parts
