Traditionally, microscope graticule lines are black, and this can mean that the indentation edge is not always as clearly defined against the measuring scale as it could be. When the graticule is illuminated, the lines turn from black to red to give excellent definition of the measuring scale over the indentation edge and therefore makes the measurement process very much easier.
