SUPERPROX® Ultrasonic Motion Sensors Model SM505 Series

SUPERPROX® Ultrasonic Motion Sensors Model SM505 Series

Product catalog summary
Introduction
The SUPERPROX® SM505 Series are ultrasonic proximity motion sensors designed for detecting container movement on conveyors. These sensors are microprocessor-based and rate-sensitive, allowing operators to set speed thresholds for machine operation. They are available in both AC and DC models and can be configured to control conveyor lines automatically.
Specifications
  • Non-contact sensing range up to 2 meters (79 inches).
  • Rate adjustments: Single file (30 to 1200 CPM), Mass wide (5 to 200 CPM).
  • Housing meets NEMA 4X and IP67 standards.
  • CE certified and ETL listed for AC models.
Features
  • Easy push-button setup for specific applications.
  • Rate and delay adjustments via potentiometers.
  • Self-contained sensors for easy positioning and configuration.
Operation Modes
  • Single-File Conveyor Sensing Mode: Maximum distance between sensor and background target is 254 mm (10 inches). The sensor output switches off when container motion is detected below the set rate.
  • Mass Conveyor Sensing Mode: Maximum distance is 1 meter (39 inches). The sensor output switches off when container motion is detected below the set rate.
Sensor Configuration
  • Switches allow configuration for sensitivity, conveyor type, and output mode (normally open or closed).
  • Push-button setup for setting background and foreground window limits.
Electrical Wiring
  • Sensor wires should be run in conduit free of AC power or control wires.
  • Different wire colors for DC and AC models are specified for proper connection.
Model Reference Guide
The guide provides details on specifying the correct model number based on power type, sensing function, design level, sensing range, and special features.
General Overview
This document provides technical specifications and details for various sensor models, including DC and AC power models, connector styles, and mounting accessories. It covers the wiring configurations, power requirements, output specifications, and environmental considerations for these sensors.
Specifications
  • Sensing Range: 51 mm to 1 m (2 to 39 inches)
  • Sonic Frequency: 200 kHz
  • Power Requirements: DC models require 12 to 24 VDC, while AC models require 100 to 240 VAC.
  • Outputs: DC models offer NPN sinking and PNP sourcing options, while AC models use a triac output.
Wiring and Connections
The document details the wiring configurations for both DC and AC models, including color-coded wire connections for sensors and power models. It also describes the connector styles available for different models.
Mounting Accessories
Various mounting accessories are listed, including stainless steel and Teflon brackets, which allow for different mounting configurations and adjustments.
Environmental and Protection Features
  • Operating Temperature Range: 0°C to 50°C (32°F to 122°F)
  • Storage Temperature Range: -40°C to 100°C (-40°F to 212°F)
  • Protection Ratings: NEMA 4X, IP67
  • Chemical Resistance: Resists most acids and bases, with options for fluorosilicone transducer faces for additional resistance.
Agency Approvals
The sensors comply with CE standards and some models carry the ETL safety label.
Construction and Materials
The sensors are constructed with ULTEM® or NORYL® housings, silicone rubber transducer faces, and PVC jacketed cables. The document also provides detailed dimensions for the sensors and their components.
Model Selection
A selection chart is provided to help choose the appropriate sensor model based on power version, connection style, sensing range, and other features.

gap-type sensors which stop machine processes upon sens- dition, this SUPERPROX® mi- croprocessor-based series (Model SM505 through Model sensors is rate sensitive. Even with a back-to-back, no-gap con- dition, the operator can, through set the speed below which the output switches off, causing the particular machine under control to stop. Another potentiometer time delay desired to restart the particular machine under control once the resumed container speed is at or above the set rate. This time delay feature prevents the output from switching on pre- maturely when the container models, these self-contained throughout the packaging line and easily configured to auto- matically control the synchro- nized starting and stopping of conveyor lines and the starting machines to run longer before shutdown due to a line backup, and to start earlier once the movement begins, the result is a smoother, more efficient con- tainer handling system. These sensors can be used in either single-file or mass-wide conveyor operations with all types SUPERPROX® sensors, a simple its within which the container mo- tion is monitored and detected. tainer motion is monitored as soon as a back-to-back, no-gap condition exists. In mass-wide applications, container motion is monitored when a container moves laterally to within 8 in. of This SUPERPROX® sensor series detects the movement of either plastic, glass, or metal (1-1/2") in diameter on single file and mass conveyors. By using the unique "window" sensing fea- ture with two potentiometers and posite side of the container, movement is reliably detected. Control Compartment A unique feature available to the user of these sensors is the facility to quickly set up each sensor for a specific mo- tion sensing application. The sensor is configured through three slide switches, ton (See Figure 2) located inside a wa- ter-tight control compartment on the sensor. To access the controls, remove the small square cover on the back of the sensor. Simply loosen the two flat- head cover screws and insert a small- blade screwdriver in either the top or bottom slot to remove the cover. A short plastic tether prevents separation of the cover from the sensor....

place a container on the conveyor against the rail nearest to the sensor with the main body area directly in front of the sensor and press the LIMITS push-but- ton once. Again, while the push-button is depressed, the LED is amber. Upon re- lease of the push-button, the LED turns green indicating the background and fore- ground window limits have been success- fully set. If 30 seconds elapse before the foreground window limits are set, the lim- its revert back to the previous settings. At the same time, the sensor output switches from OFF to ON, placing the sensor into the operational mode, ready...

background target aligned with sensor and within sensing range before re- peating background limits Place a container on conveyor with the container directly in front of the sensor before pressing LIMITS push-button for setting the foreground limits. Press and release LIMITS push-button: • Green - Foreground limits accepted; sensor is ready for detecting container motion. • Flashing Red - Foreground limits not accepted; verify the container is centered and parallel with sensor face (flashing red LED lasts for 10 seconds or until the push-button is pressed again). Move container away from sen...
