Description
The Stratum Purge and Trap Concentrator (PTC) is a sample preparation instrument designed to extract Volatile Organic Compounds (VOCs) from aqueous and solid samples using Helium or Nitrogen. The VOCs are collected on a sorbent trap and then released into a Gas Chromatograph (GC) system. This method is widely used in EPA methodologies and other analytical applications requiring VOC concentration. Teledyne Tekmar has been a leader in this technology since the 1980s, continuously improving the system to meet evolving analytical challenges.
How It Works
The system extracts VOCs using a controlled flow, depositing them onto a sorbent trap, which is then heated and back flushed to a GC or GC/MS system. The Stratum PTC features advanced technology, including a patented electronic Mass Flow Controller (MFC) and intuitive software for system performance monitoring.
Modes and Requirements- Purge: Inert gas flows through the sample matrix to extract VOCs onto the trap. The efficiency is determined by the gas volume (flow rate x time).
- Dry Purge: Removes excess water to prevent chromatographic interference.
- Desorb Preheat/Desorb: The trap is heated to release compounds, which are then transferred to the GC system.
- Bake: Heats the trap and increases system gas flow to prepare for the next run.
Options- Guardian Foam Sensor: Detects foaming and shuts off the purge flow.
- Guardian and Eliminator: Adds antifoam agent when foam is detected.
- Autosampler: Reduces manual labor and improves data quality.
- Cryofocusing Module: Enhances chromatographic resolution.
Applications and Industries- Environmental
- Pharmaceutical
- Food and Beverage
- Petrochemical
