Spiralock Fastener

Product catalog summary
Product Specifications
The document outlines the specifications for Spiralock Fastener Products, emphasizing the unique internal locking thread forms and the availability of various sizes, including custom designs. Contact information and a website are provided for further details.
Product Introduction
Spiralock Corporation has developed an innovative internal thread form featuring a 30-degree wedge ramp. This design enhances the performance of standard male thread fasteners by improving joint fatigue life, resisting vibration loosening, and reducing the need for additional locking devices.
Spiralock Thread Form
The Spiralock thread form is compatible with standard male fasteners and requires 10%-20% more torque due to its design. It offers consistent friction and joint tension, with proven resistance to vibration loosening, outperforming other locking devices in tests.
Load Distribution and Fatigue Life
Research indicates that Spiralock threads distribute load more evenly than standard threads, reducing joint failures and enhancing fatigue life by 200% due to even load distribution and reduced stress concentration.
Fastener Product Offering
The document lists various fastener products, including hex flange nuts, self-clinching nuts, and wire inserts, with specifications on sizes, materials, and coatings. Custom orders are available for sizes not listed.
Material Specifications
Materials include carbon steel, stainless steel (300 and 400 series), and DFAR compliant materials. Self-clinching nuts are custom-made in steel or stainless steel, with material type specified when ordering.
Spiralock Wire Thread Inserts
These helically-coiled fastening devices provide permanent, wear-resistant screw threads, protecting tapped holes from stripping, seizing, corrosion, and wear. They feature a unique 30° wedge ramp thread form design.
Features and Benefits
Spiralock inserts offer superior vibration resistance, no risk of galling or seizing, and combine the advantages of wire inserts with Spiralock's vibration resistance. Drive Notch (DN™) Inserts speed installation, reduce labor costs, and prevent damage to expensive castings.
Performance and Features
Made of cold-rolled Type 304 stainless steel wire, work-hardened to a tensile strength above 200,000 psi, these inserts minimize friction-induced thread erosion. Proper insert length selection is crucial for balancing bolt tensile strength against parent material shear strength.
Installation Instructions
1. Drill the hole using the specified drill size.
2. Countersink the hole to prevent feather edges.
3. Tap the hole with the proper STI plug or bottoming tap.
4. Install the insert, ensuring proper orientation for Drive Notch inserts.
Additional Information
Spiralock inserts are available in various sizes and lengths, with several coating options available by special order. Tanged inserts are available in bulk packaging, while Drive Notch inserts come on a plastic strip for orientation.
Installation Efficiency
DN inserts should remain on the strip during ordering and installation to save time, as they are oriented in the same direction. The installation tool allows the strip to pass through, facilitating quick installation.
Tang Removal Procedure
For insert sizes up to M6 or ¼ inch, use the provided punch and a light hammer to remove the tang. For sizes above M6 or ¼ inch, use the insert key to disengage the tang before removing it with a hammer.
Tools and Specifications
A detailed table lists various thread sizes, corresponding taps, fitting tools, and other accessories like prewinders and extraction tools, with part numbers for easy reference.
Recommendations
A prewinder is recommended for smaller sizes of tanged inserts and is the standard tool for Drive Notch inserts. Contact details are provided for further information on power installation tooling.
Contact Information
Contact details for Spiralock in the USA, UK, Brazil, and China are provided, along with their website and email for further inquiries.
Certifications
The document mentions compliance with AS/EN/JISQ9100 - Revision B and ISO 9001:2008 standards.

Product Introduction Spiralock Corporation has re-engineered the standard (female) internal thread form and added a unique 30degree wedge ramp at the root of the thread. This unidirectional internal thread form, called Spiralock®, mates with standard 60-degree male thread fasteners. The wedge ramp allows the bolt to spin freely relative to the female threads until clamp load is applied. At that point, the crests of the standard male thread form are drawn tightly against the wedge ramp, eliminating radial clearances and creating a continuous spiral line contact along the entire length of the thread...

Things to Know About the Spiralock Thread Form MATES WITH STANDARD MALE FASTENER The Spiralock thread form is designed to mate with standard 2A/3A fractional, 4g6g or 6g metric or UNJ-MJ male fasteners. TORQUE/TENSION RELATIONSHIP The Spiralock thread form design creates a helical line of contact between the crest of the bolt threads and its 30-degree wedge ramp. In order to generate similar joint tension as compared to 60-degree threads, the Spiralock threaded joint generally requires 10% - 20% greater torque due to the redirecting of some assembly forces from an axial direction to a radial...

Things to know about the Spiralock Thread Form LOAD DISTRIBUTION Research studies performed by Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory, Massachusetts Institute of Technology and others have confirmed that the load carried by Spiralock threads is much more uniform than the standard 60-degree threads. Additionally, they show that the percentage of load on the first engaged thread produced with a Spiralock tap is significantly lower, 24% versus 64% with five thread engagement. Spiralock Thread Standard 60º Thread The uniform loading eliminates the load concentration at the first engaged thread, thereby...

Spiralock Wire Thread Inserts Tanged and Drive Notch (DN™) Spiralock wire thread inserts are helically-coiled fastening devices that provide permanent, wear resistant screw threads that exceed the strength of most parent materials; the inserts are designed to protect tapped holes against failures due to stripping, seizing, corrosion, and wear. Spiralock inserts are unlike any other wire thread insert for the fact that our inner diameter wire geometry incorporates our 30° wedge ramp thread form design. Spiralock Wire Thread Inserts Tanged and DN™ Performance and Features Spiralock inserts are made of cold-rolled Type 304 stainless steel wire (AS7245), work-hardened to a tensile strength above 200,000 psi, having a hardness of Rc43-50. The finished surface (8-16 micro inches) is exceedingly smooth, virtually eliminating friction-induced thread erosion. It is important to select the proper insert length in order to balance the bolt tensile strength against the shear strength of the parent material. The insert lengths are calculated numbers because the inserts cannot be measured in the free state....

Tanged and DN™ Wire Thread Insert Installation Instructions Step 1: Drill the hole Select proper drill size from the hole drilling specification chart (Table I). The Minimum Drilled Hole Depth is designed to allow for: the use of standard countersink as tabulated, the use of a Screw Thread Insert (STI) plug or bottoming tap, the use of standard installation set down of ¾ - 1 ½ pitch below work surface. Step 2: Countersinking Before tapping the hole, it is good practice to countersink the hole in order to prevent a feather edge at the start of the hole. Countersinking dimensions are listed in...
