Product catalog summary
Introduction
SPIROL is a company that has been providing innovative fastening and joining solutions since 1948. They focus on high-quality components that improve assembly quality, extend product life, and reduce manufacturing costs. SPIROL offers global design assistance and operates in multiple countries.
Why Use a Solid Pin?
Solid pins are ideal for applications needing a positive stop, smooth surfaces, hole plugging, manual alignment, increased strength, or precise hole locations. SPIROL provides various types of pins, including Straight Pins, Knurled Pins, and Barbed Pins, each with unique features and applications.
Types of Pins
  • Straight Pins: Uniform with chamfered ends, suitable for press-fit applications in plastics.
  • Knurled Pins: Available with straight or helical knurls, designed to cut into the host material for higher retention.
  • Barbed Pins: Designed for plastic assemblies with backward-angled barbs for maximum retention.
  • Press-N-Lok Pins: Used to permanently retain two plastic components.
  • Latch Pins: Designed for plastic hinges, offering corrosion resistance and ease of installation.
Design Guidelines
Straight knurls offer lower insertion forces and resistance to turning, while helical knurls provide resistance to torque and axial push-out. The location of knurls or barbs can be customized for specific design requirements.
Hole Design
For press-fit retention, the pin should be harder than the host material. Barbs are recommended for flexible plastics, while knurls are better for resisting rotation.
Materials and Finishes
SPIROL offers pins in various materials such as stainless steel, aluminum, and low carbon steel, with finishes like passivation and plain/oiled. Special materials like alloy steel and nickel silver are available for unique applications.
Specifications
Detailed specifications for Straight Pins, Knurled Pins, and Headed Knurled Pins are provided, including dimensions, materials, and finishes.
Metric and Inch Specifications
The document outlines metric and inch specifications for pins, including nominal diameters, head diameters, head thickness, and barb diameters. Length tolerances are specified as ±0.25mm for metric and ±0.010 inches for inch specifications.
Material and Finish
The materials specified include low carbon steel, stainless steel, aluminum, and nickel silver. Finishes include plain and passivated options.
Part Number Code
Instructions for ordering pins are provided, including the format for specifying nominal diameter, length, material, finish, and pin series number.
Application-Specific Pins
The document mentions specific pin series such as Latch Pin Series LP500 and Twist-Lok™ Pin Series RH600, with notes on availability and customization options.
Pin Installation Technology

WHY USE A SOLID PIN? With so many types of industrial standard pins to choose from, the challenge for the designer is to select the most cost-effective pin that meets the specific application requirements. While more than one type of pin may meet certain requirements, here are some general guidelines when a Solid Pin may be most suitable: • When a head is required for a positive stop or to retain a thin member to a thicker member of the assembly When a smooth, uninterrupted surface is required such as when used in conjunction with a pawl or other angular component When a hollow pin is not suitable...

DESIGN GUIDELINES HOW TO SELECT THE PROPER RETENTION FEATURE SPIROL manufactures Solid Pins with straight knurls, helical knurls and barbs. There are many overlaps as to the applications in which these retention features can be used successfully. Straight knurls have lower insertion forces than helical knurls, offer resistance to turning within the assembly, but provide limited retention when axially loaded. Therefore, straight knurls are often recommended when the pin is used to transmit torque such as when used as an axle to rotate a wheel. Helical knurls provide both resistance to torque and...

MATERIALS AND FINISHESSTANDARD MATERIALSSTANDARD FINISHES Plain/Oiled (K) This finish is a thin coating of dry-to-the touch oil that provides corrosion resistance during storage and shipping. Since this lubricating oil is suspended in a carrier which evaporates over time, the pins are dry-to-the-touch and conducive for automatic feeding and assembly. Passivation of stainless steel Solid Pins is a process whereby surface contaminates such as embedded tool steel and other free iron particles are removed. The sole purpose of passivation is to remove embedded iron; not to clean the part. While all...
