Features and Advantages
  • Utilizes innovative radar technology for non-contact discharge measurement, integrating external data such as water level and cross-section profile.
  • Enhances existing measuring sites with additional surface velocity measurement, suitable for cableway installations.
  • Proven Sommer RQ radar technology ensures maintenance-free, flood-proof operation without structural water work.
  • Capable of measuring in tidal waters, backwater situations, and areas with high turbidity or weed growth.
  • Measuring range from +/-0.10 to +/-15 m/s, with optional analogue outputs from 4 to 20 mA.
Sommer Radar Technology
  • Non-contact measurement increases reliability and reduces maintenance costs, unaffected by water contamination or debris.
  • Ideal for upgrading existing gauging sites by improving accuracy with surface flow velocity data.
Installation and Measuring Range
  • Can be mounted on bridges or other structures above water, with a maximum installation height of 130 meters and a minimum distance of 0.5 meters from the water surface.
  • Suitable for measuring sites with stable riverbeds and non-still water surfaces, avoiding rocks and whirlpools.
Measuring Principle
  • Surface flow velocity is measured using the Doppler frequency shift method, with a radar signal at 24 GHz.
  • External water level data is integrated for discharge calculations, using various measurement devices and transmitted as electrical signals.

General Sommer radar technology The radar sensors of the RQ-series measure contactfree the discharge of rivers, streams, open channels or canals. The RQ-30L in particular continuously determines the surface flow velocity. Together with the values of the actual water level and information about the cross section profile the sensor is able to calculate the discharge. Non-contact = failsafe + low maintenance Thanks to the non-contact measurement technology it is possible to install the sensor outside the water. Hence, the equipment is not susceptible to contamination, debris or driftwood in the...

ProductLeaflet_RQ-30L-3

Measuring principle Surface flow velocity The measurement of the surface flow velocity is based on the Doppler frequency shift method: A radar signal is transmitted to the water surface at a constant frequency of 24 GHz. The sensor measures the partially reflected signal whose frequency is shifted due to the water movement. The surface velocity is determined through a spectral analysis. With a hydraulic model the sensor converts the surface velocity into the relevant mean velocity which is needed for any further discharge calculations. Local velocity (vl) measuring point Mean velocity (vm) Cross...
