Specifications: The Gauger420 is a mono-block, 2-wire ultrasonic level meter designed for measuring distances to liquid or solid targets without contact. It features a 4-20mA current loop and USB interface for configuration and firmware upgrades. Optional features include a display, HART protocol, and an external temperature sensor. The device operates at ultrasonic frequencies of 75 KHz or 50 KHz and is suitable for noisy environments. It is powered by 24VDC and can measure distances from 15 cm to 8 meters (75 KHz) or 35 cm to 9.5 meters (50 KHz).
Installation Guidelines: Gauger420 should be installed above the target without making contact. It is typically mounted on top of a tank or attached to a metal arm. The device should be positioned away from vertical tank walls and other obstructions, maintaining a minimum gap of 30 cm plus 10 cm for each meter of measurement range. It should also be placed away from sources of acoustic noise or vibrations and should be perpendicular to the target surface with an angular displacement of less than 5°.
Configuration and Operation: The Gauger420 can be configured using a local keypad and display or via a PC using a USB port. The setup process is wizard-driven, allowing for easy configuration of parameters. The device supports rapid cloning of configurations across multiple units.
Figures and Illustrations: The manual includes various figures illustrating the parts, dimensions, and installation setups for the Gauger420, providing visual guidance for users.
Echo Measurement Reliability: Echo strength between 3dB and 8dB is considered reliable for measurement. The echo amplitude is measured just before navigating through the toolbar.
Product Identification: From the measurement screen, navigate to the ID symbol to view product information such as Serial Number and Part Number. Additional options include viewing Software (SW), Hardware (HW), and Manufacturing Date information.
Configuration with Keypad and Display: Gauger420 menus are organized in a tree-like format. A 7-step wizard guides the setup process using metric units. For American units, use PC configuration. Parameters not set during quick setup default and can be modified later using Advanced Setup.
Advanced Settings: Advanced settings are categorized under 4-20, HART, Algorithm, and Device state. Ensure basic settings are correct to avoid incorrect readings.
PC Configuration: Gauger420 can be configured using a PC tool, allowing cloning of systems via a configuration text file. The process involves preparing a text file and downloading it using HyperTerminal or similar applications.
Firmware Upgrade Requirements and Procedure: Use only manufacturer-approved firmware. PC requirements include Windows XP SP2 or Windows 7, CD drive, USB port, and admin rights. Internet access to SolidAT site or Gauger420 Installation CD is needed. Download authorized Gauger420 firmware.
Installation of Firmware Upgrade Tool and USB Driver: Download the appropriate Firmware Upgrade Tool from SolidAT's website or use the Installation CD. Unzip and execute the application for Windows 7 or run Setup.exe for other Windows versions. Install the Gauger420 USB driver as per instructions.
Firmware Upgrade Procedure: Copy new firmware to a directory. Run the Firmware Upgrade Tool and wait for COM port identification. Select the new firmware file and initiate the upgrade. Wait for the process to complete and restart Gauger420.
Troubleshooting: Install .NET Framework if missing. Ensure admin rights for installation. If COM port issues arise, reconnect USB or restart the tool. For halted upgrades, wait 10 minutes before retrying.
Serial Data Monitoring: Gauger420 can send data to a PC via RS485 interface. Use HyperTerminal for viewing or capturing data. Data includes distance, temperature, and system variables.
USB Driver Installation: Copy "SolidAT Drivers XP" from CD to PC. Connect Gauger420 via USB and follow installation prompts. Check Device Manager for successful installation.
Application Dimensions and Constraints: Defines variables like distance, level, and blocking distances. Maximum range for Gauger 75 KHz is 8 meters. Near and Far Blocking Distances help manage echo detection.
Default Values and Settings: Default settings include distance units, application power, and 4-20mA settings. Distance units can be metric or imperial. Display can show distance, level, or volume.
False Echo Scan by PC: This procedure is used to identify and eliminate fixed obstructions that may interfere with accurate measurements. The steps include installing the Gauger, executing specific commands (RSD, FES, USB RST), and repeating the process to define false echoes. The goal is to ensure the Gauger ignores these false echoes.
Filling Rate: The filling rate is adjustable to track fast-moving targets. A higher filling rate improves tracking but may reduce measurement accuracy. It is recommended to use the lowest possible filling rate for accuracy.
Gas Velocity Coefficient: This coefficient adjusts the Gauger for environments where the ultrasonic pulse velocity differs from air. It is configured using the GCOF command, based on the relative velocity in the gas environment.
HART Communications: HART is a digital communication protocol used with Gauger420. It requires a minimum voltage and current and supports up to 16 devices on the same bus. Configuration includes setting measurands and addresses, with specific guidelines for parameter settings.
Interdependencies: There are specific interdependencies for metric and American units regarding EMP, FUL, NBD, and FBD parameters. These must be configured correctly to ensure accurate measurements.
Mapping Table: A mapping table can be defined for Open Channel Flow applications, allowing level measurements to be converted to flow rates through interpolation. Commands are provided for defining and displaying table entries.
Open Channel Flow: This feature calculates flow in channels using structures like flumes and weirs. GaugerGSM supports various designs and can calculate flow using hydrological formulas or the Manning Formula for channels without structures.
Reset and Operating Hours: The Gauger420 can be reset to factory defaults or restarted without changing pre-configured parameters. It tracks operating hours with non-resettable and resettable counters for maintenance purposes.
Temperature Sensors: The system compensates for temperature variations using internal or external sensors. Temperature readings can be displayed, showing current, high, and low values.
Volume Measurement: Gauger420 calculates volume based on level measurements and tank dimensions. Supported tank shapes include box-shaped and cylindrical tanks.
4-20 Communications: This setup uses current magnitude to convey measurement information. Users can configure the values represented by 4mA and 20mA, and set error states. Performance may be adjusted based on available electrical power.
Ultrasonic Pulse Transmission Rate: The document discusses the impact of decreased ultrasonic pulse transmission rates on the Gauger420's ability to respond to rapidly moving targets. At low current and voltage, the pulse rate can be reduced to a quarter of its maximum rate.
4-20 Constraints and Settings: The 4-20 settings must be configured after setting the Full and Empty levels. Once these levels are set, the 4-20 settings revert to default values. Additional constraints related to the 4-20 settings are detailed in the Interdependencies section.
Default 4-20 Settings: The document includes figures illustrating the default 4-20 values for measuring level, volume, and distance.
Troubleshooting: The troubleshooting section provides recommendations for various symptoms:
  • Power On Faults: If the Gauger420 does not power on, check the power supply ratings and electrical connections. If it powers on but does not measure, ensure it is not powered via USB.
  • Ultrasonic Related Faults: For constant ECHO SEARCH status, ensure the target is within the specified range, the sensor is correctly aimed, and the sensor face is clean. For incorrect level measurements, verify distance measurement and settings. If the level measurement displays Full level continuously, clear disturbances and adjust NBD if using an extension pipe.

threads. Preferably, tighten by hand only. If you do use a wrench, grip Gauger420 at the wrench grip surfaces only (see figure Gauger420 parts) and exert light force. II.3. Dead zone See reference guide: “Application dimensions and constraints”. A gap must be kept between the face of sensor and the topmost level of the target. This gap must be at least the size of the specified “dead zone”. If the target level passes the dead zone, measurements may be unpredictable. Therefore, it is recommended to keep a margin gap between the expected topmost level and the dead zone border. Where the topmost...
