Metric Hoopster Supplement

Product catalog summary
Introduction
The document introduces the Hoopster® Retaining Rings, a new addition to Smalley's catalog. These rings are designed for thin wall cylinders and are coiled from flat wire, making them suitable for medium or light loads. They are available in carbon and 302 stainless steel, with no tooling charges for special orders.

Product Specifications
The Hoopster rings are characterized by their radial projection, minimal low profile, and shallow groove depth. They are ideal for applications requiring a low-profile retaining solution. The document provides detailed dimensions for various part numbers, specifying housing diameter, groove dimensions, and yield strength.

Design and Geometry
The Hoopster rings offer superior strength due to their low profile and mechanical advantage over traditional retaining rings. The design minimizes groove deformation, a common limitation in conventional rings. The document emphasizes the importance of sharp corners on the groove to maximize load capacity.

Thrust Capacity
The thrust capacity of Hoopster rings is determined by the shallow groove depth and the material's yield strength. The document provides a formula for calculating allowable thrust load based on groove deformation, considering factors like shaft diameter, groove depth, and material yield strength.

Material Yield Strengths
Typical yield strengths for various materials are listed, including hardened steel, cold drawn steel, hot rolled steel, aluminum, and cast iron.

Ring Abutment
The document explains that unlike conventional rings, Hoopster rings can accommodate a corner break in the retained component without sacrificing thrust load. This is due to the negligible moment arm in the Hoopster design.

RING ABUTMENT Unlike a conventional Spiral Retaining Ring or Snap Ring, the retained component in a Hoopster® Retaining Ring assembly may have a corner break. Thrust load is not sacrificed when the retained component has a broken corner because the moment arm is negligible in a Hoopster design. The 3 sketches above illustrate acceptable abutment practice. GROOVE DESIGN AND GEOMETRY Groove deformation is by far the most common design limitation of most retaining rings. Unlike a conventional retaining ring or snap ring that fails by deforming and twisting, the Hoopster retaining ring shows superior...
