Open the catalog to page 3Introduction Conveyor chains, whether they are roller or cast in construction, are found today in virtually every industry. Unlike other types of chains that transfer power from one shaft to another, the conveyor chain is used to pull (or elevate) a load, usually in a straight line, at relatively slow speeds. As a result, the conveyor chain is rated in terms of their allowable working loads and not by power or speed. For all the different types of conveyors and chain applications, there is an equally large number of chain configurations and materials available. The SKF range of conveyor...
Open the catalog to page 4The correct material and hardness of pins, bushings, rollers and side bars provide high quality, long lasting chains. Heat treatment SKF chain components undergo different heat treatment processes depending on the component and material grade. The most common heat treatment p rocesses used during the manufacturing process are: • Through hardening – when using m edium carbon steel. All steel parts are treated throughout to increase the chains’ component strength and improve wear resistance. • Carburizing – the heat process used to increase the wear resistance of chain components (and some...
Open the catalog to page 5General guidelines for selecting conveyor chains When selecting conveyor chains for a particular application, there are a number of factors that should be considered. These i nclude, but are not limited to, the following: • Working load (chain pull) • Chain speed • Pitch requirement (particularly important for attachment chains such a elevators) • Type and spacing of attachment (if any) • Chain length (centres), or lengths for multistrand applications • Lubrication (type and method of application) • Environmental issues (such as dirt, t emperature extremes, chemicals, contamination, hygiene...
Open the catalog to page 6• Temperature (elevated) (FT). Where there are high ambient temperatures the load carrying capacity of the chain should be reduced, especially if temperatures exceed 160˚C (320˚F). If temperatures are particularly high, special materials may have to be considered. For low temperature (< minus 20˚C) applications, which typically have to contend with condensation and water, special materials e.g. stainless steel, may have to be considered. • Multiple stands (Sn) .One way of reducing chain size is using multiple strands. Multiple strands are common where an attachment links two or more strands...

Open the catalog to page 8Working closely with you Our objective is to help our customers improve productivity, minimize maintenance, achieve higher energy and resource efficiency, and optimize designs for long service life and reliability. Innovative solutions Whether the application is linear or rotary or a combination of the two, SKF engineers can work with you at each stage of the asset life cycle to improve machine performance by looking at the entire application. This approach doesn’t just focus on individual components like bearings or seals. It looks at the whole application to see how each component...
