Product catalog summary
Description: The Simplex LBD Load Banks are stationary, resistive systems that use engine radiator airflow for cooling, reducing size and cost. They operate with a critical air temperature rise limited to 100°F, allowing cooler operation compared to systems with integral fans.
Design and Installation: Designed for water-cooled engine generator sets with unit-mounted radiators, these load banks can be installed directly on radiators, within air ducts, or wall-mounted, suitable for both indoor and outdoor use. They are adaptable for aftermarket retrofit with various accessories to ease installation.
Applications: Used for reliability testing of standby generators, base load leveling, and automatic protection against generator reverse power, these load banks offer flexibility in kilowatt capacity up to 1200KW and can be specified for 50, 60, or 400 Hertz AC voltage.
Features: The load banks feature a bolt-together design up to 400KW and a weld-together design from 400KW to 1200KW. They include branch circuit fuse protection, magnetic contactor control, multiple step load configurations, and options for local or remote control, ensuring safety and durability.
Load Elements: The Pow’r Rod Load Element is weatherproof and designed to prevent electric shock and short circuits, while the Pow’r-Web Load Element is an advanced air-cooled power resistor with a short-circuit-safe design.
Specifications: Modular design allows customization to match radiator or duct dimensions. Features include UL Recognized components, fuse protection per NEC standards, and a discrete circuit design for continuous duty.
Installation Accessories: Accessories include load-bearing flanges, adjustable feet, and outflow guards for protection against hot surfaces and weather.
Sample Specifications: Detailed specifications for engineers include installation methods, electrical connections, load bank ratings, and design requirements. The load banks are self-contained units with all necessary components and are UL listed.
Exhaust and Load Elements: Outdoor installations require screened exhausts and louvers. Load elements include Simplex "Powr-Rod" for up to 400KW and "Powr-Web" for 400KW-1200KW.
Short Circuit Protection: Each 50KW load branch circuit must have branch circuit fuses with a 200,000 A.I.C current limiting type.
Load Control and Wiring: Each fused branch circuit requires a magnetic contactor. Power wiring should be 150°C XLP insulated, and control wiring should be 105°C XLP insulated.
Control Power and System Protection: Control power operates at 120V with protection against overheating, disconnecting load elements, and activating an alarm if exhaust air temperature exceeds 300°F.
Control Panel: A Type (1,3R) control panel includes control power on-off pushbuttons, indicator lamps, master load control switch, load step control switches, and a "cooling failure" alarm indicator lamp.
Warranty and Start-up Service: A 2-year warranty covers materials and service labor, with one day of on-site start-up service provided post-installation.
Manufacturer Qualifications: The load bank must be from a firm with at least five years of experience and twenty-five successful installations.
Automatic Load Bank Controller: Equipped with an automatic controller for maintaining a preset load level, with control logic, solid-state sensors, and time delays for dynamic adjustment.

Radiator-Cooled Load Bank Description Simplex LBD Load Banks are a special form of stationary, resistive, forced air-cooled load bank which utilizes the air outow of an engine radiator for cooling of the resistive load elements. This application recovers and uses the volume and velocity of air exiting the radiator and realizes in load bank design the advantages of reduced size, complexity and cost. It may appear incongruous that “hot air” from the radiator is used for “cooling.” However, “hot” and “cold” are highly relative in this case. The air exhausting from the radiator and entering the load bank may be as hot (or cold) as 180°F. However, the load elements are heated to an average of 700°F, and, most important, the air volume and velocity is very high relative to the heat energy being dissipated by the load bank. Consequently, the critical value of “air temperature rise” is limited to a conservative nominal 100°F. Despite an apparent “hot” environment, LBD Load Banks actually operate “cooler” than comparably rated load banks with integral cooling fans which are installed in the relative “cold.”

Radiator-Cooled Load Bank • Page 2 Simplex LBD Series Load Banks are intended for use with water cooled engine generator sets which are equipped with unit mounted radiators. The essential consideration for installation of an LBD Load Bank is only that it be located somewhere within the radiator air outow. Installation is simple and adaptive to site/system conditions. The load bank can be installed in numerous ways, including direct bolted attachment to the radiator, mounting within an air duct, wall mounting over the air outow opening, indoors or outdoors. Since the load bank design is adaptive...

Radiator-Cooled Load Bank • Page 3 Pow’r Rod Load Element Simplex bolt-together design LBD Load Bank (up to 400KW) utilizes the Pow’r Rod Load Element (UL Recognized Component, totally enclosed, sealed and weatherproof). Considerations of personnel safety and equipment durability dictate the use of totally enclosed load elements in a radiator airow cooled load bank. In this application the load bank will be installed in front of the engine radiator where the load elements are visible and within reach of personnel and exposed to the weather. The elements will be subject to mechanical stresses...
