  • Pow’r-Rod and Pow’r-Web Load Elements for different designs.
  • Comprehensive branch circuit fuse protection and magnetic contactor control.
  • Multiple step load configurations with local or remote control options.
  • Galvanized steel construction and finish painted enclosure options.
  • Automatic over-temperature protection and continuous duty.
Pow’r Rod Load Element
This UL Recognized Component is enclosed, sealed, and weatherproof, designed to withstand mechanical stresses and airborne contamination, reducing electric shock and short circuit risks.
Powr-Web Resistive Load Element
Used in weld-together designs (400KW-1200KW), featuring a short-circuit-safe design with ceramic clad stainless steel rods, operating at half the maximum temperature rating of the alloy.
Specifications
  • Alloy: FeCrAl with a maximum continuous temperature rating of 1920°F.
  • UL Recognized with fuse protection per NEC standards.
  • Branch circuit fuse protection to prevent short circuits and fire hazards.
Installation
Can be installed indoors or outdoors within the radiator air outflow, with various mounting accessories and outlet screens available.
Sample Specifications
Includes detailed specifications for engineers, covering installation methods, electrical connections, load bank ratings, and design requirements, with options for control, enclosure type, and mounting adaptors.
Exhaust and Load Elements
The exhaust must be screened, and louvers are required for outdoor installations. Load elements include Simplex 'Powr-Rod' for up to 400KW and 'Powr-Web' for 400KW-1200KW.
Short Circuit Protection
Each 50KW load branch circuit must have branch circuit fuses with a 200,000 A.I.C current limiting type.
Load Control and Wiring
Each fused branch circuit requires a magnetic contactor. Power wiring should be 150°C XLP insulated, and control wiring should be 105°C XLP insulated. Main terminals should be barrier type with compression terminals.
System Protection
A comprehensive protection system must disconnect load elements and activate an alarm if exhaust air temperature exceeds 300°F.
Control Panel
A Type (1,3R) control panel for automatic or manual operation is required, including control power on-off pushbuttons, indicator lamps, and load control switches. Remote control panels must be UL listed.
Warranty and Start-up Service
A 2-year warranty covering materials and labor is provided, along with one day of on-site start-up service post-installation.
Manufacturer Qualifications
The load bank must be from a firm with at least five years of experience and twenty-five successful installations. The specified model is Simplex LBD Series.
Automatic Load Bank Controller
The load bank should have an automatic controller for maintaining a preset load level, operating continuously in automatic mode, adjusting load components in response to power source demands. Manual control is available when switched to manual mode.

LBD 50KW-1200KW Load Bank-1

LBD-Series Radiator-Cooled Load Bank Description Simplex LBD Load Banks are a special form of stationary, resistive, forced air-cooled load bank which utilizes the air outow of an engine radiator for cooling of the resistive load elements. This application recovers and uses the volume and velocity of air exiting the radiator and realizes in load bank design the advantages of reduced size, complexity and cost. It may appear incongruous that “hot air” from the radiator is used for “cooling.” Insight Onsite However, “hot” and “cold” are highly relative in this case. The air exhausting from the radiator and entering the load bank may be as hot (or cold) as 180°F. However, the load elements are heated to an average of 700°F, and, most important, the air volume and velocity is very high relative to the heat energy being dissipated by the load bank. Consequently, the critical value of “air temperature rise” is limited to a conservative nominal 100°F. Despite an apparent “hot” environment, LBD Load Banks actually operate “cooler” than comparably rated load banks with integral cooling fans which are installed in the relative “cold.” ®

LBD-Series ® Radiator-Cooled Load Bank • Page 2 Simplex LBD Series Load Banks are intended for use with water cooled engine generator sets which are equipped with unit mounted radiators. The essential consideration for installation of an LBD Load Bank is only that it be located somewhere within the radiator air outow. Installation is simple and adaptive to site/system conditions. The load bank can be installed in numerous ways, including direct bolted attachment to the radiator, mounting within an air duct, wall mounting over the air outow opening, indoors or outdoors. Since the load bank design...

Insight Onsite LBD-Series Radiator-Cooled Load Bank • Page 3 Pow’r Rod Load Element Simplex bolt-together design LBD Load Bank (up to 400KW) utilizes the Pow’r Rod Load Element (UL Recognized Component, totally enclosed, sealed and weatherproof). Considerations of personnel safety and equipment durability dictate the use of totally enclosed load elements in a radiator airow cooled load bank. In this application the load bank will be installed in front of the engine radiator where the load elements are visible and within reach of personnel and exposed to the weather. The elements will be subject...
