EMC REVERBERATION CHAMBERS www.siepel.com The reverberation chambers present the advantage of making it possible to operate immunity and emission tests in compliance with international standards on a wide range of frequencies, close to those of EMC standards related to anechoic chambers, without absorbers. They are thus an operational and compliant test facility for a reduced cost, which ensures enhanced testing competitiveness and a faster return on investment. However, the limitations in terms of lowest frequency of use for an MSRC with reasonable dimensions make this test setup hardly suitable for full-compliance EMI testing at low frequencies. Therefore, MSRC should not be seen as an alternative to anechoic chambers, for both test setups complete each other in terms of targeted applications. Furthermore, as soon as very high power levels are required, the limits of the market instrumentation (amplifiers, in particular) can rapidly be reached: For example, above 1 GHz, the latest versions of military and aeronautics standards impose tests at levels in the order of 3,500 V/m CW or even 6,000 V/m in pulse modulation, levels that cannot be achieved with conventional instruments. This technical constraint can be resolved using MSRC test facilities, since one of their most advantageous properties is the fact that high E-fields can be obtained in them from a low incident power (for example 100 V/m at 1 GHz for 1 W of input power on the connector of the field generating antenna in a 3.5m x 2.5m x 2.9m MSRC).
