Introduction: This document serves as a comprehensive guide to S.I. Tech's RS-232 to Fiber Optic solutions, detailing product specifications, applications, and technical standards. It emphasizes the transition from traditional RS-232 serial communications to fiber optic technology, which enhances data transmission capabilities over longer distances.
1. RS-232 Products: Various configurations for RS-232 products are outlined, including Point to Point, Multidrop, Remote Terminal Clusters, User Clusters, Ring (Loop), and Opto Isolated setups. These configurations are designed to optimize data communication over fiber optic cables, with distances up to 2 km.
2. RS-232 Specification: The RS-232 standard, defined by the EIA and ANSI, is discussed, including its international equivalents. The document explains the standard's role in interfacing data terminal equipment (DTE) with data circuit terminating equipment (DCE) using serial binary data interchange.
3. RS-232 Connector: Details on the DB-25 connector used in RS-232 interfaces are provided, explaining pin assignments and their functions, emphasizing the importance of correct pinout configurations for effective communication.
4. RS-232 to Fiber Optic Bit-Drivers: Various models of Bit-Drivers are described, each with specific features such as data rates, power options, and environmental protections. These devices replace traditional modems, facilitating data transmission over fiber optics.
5. RS-232 Metallic Bit-Drivers: These devices offer RS-232 to RS-422 conversion, supporting data rates up to 56 Kbps, designed for short-haul modem applications, providing robust data transmission over metallic cables.
6. RS-232 Optoisolator Bit-Drivers: Optoisolator Bit-Drivers provide isolation between RS-232 devices, enhancing data integrity and protection against electrical interference.
7. RS-232 to Fiber Optic Multiplexers: Multiplexers allow multiple RS-232 channels to be transmitted over a single fiber optic link, supporting both asynchronous and synchronous data transmission.
Conclusion: S.I. Tech's RS-232 to Fiber Optic solutions offer versatile and reliable options for extending data communication capabilities, suitable for various industrial and commercial applications.

S.I.TECH RS-232 S.I. Tech’s business and original developments started with RS-232 or so called serial communications. In early 1980, with the need for computerization of various processes, offices, and businesses there was an increasing use of the serial port. It was apparent that longer distance communications was not possible as wire and cables of the day were very limited in data communication capabilities. Belden and subsequently S.I.Tech were first to develop affordable fiber optic data communications. The first products were tested and approved by Bell Labs, DEC, and others. S.I.Tech has...

S.I.TECH RS-232 CONNECTOR EIA-232 (formerly RS-232, which it is called by most of the industry and which it is called in S.I. Tech literature) is a standard for the interface between data terminal equipment (DTE) and data circuit terminating equipment (DCE), employing serial binary data exchange. The standard calls for a specific 25-position connector that is called DB-25 in S.I. Tech literature. The standard also specifies that the female connector shall be part of the DCE. In general, S.I. Tech RS-232 Bit-Drivers® are DCE’s and the connectors, as shown in Tables A, B, and C under “Data Connection”...
