TAKING THE NEXT STEPS TOWARDS A CLEANER FUTURE WITH GAS ANALYSIS Welcome to Expert Solutions (ES) magazine issue 37. We continue the themes introduced in ES 29 Clean Air, which focused on the gas analysis solutions for our three-phase clean air strategy. Decarbonization – by reducing carbon emissions – is an area of growing importance for industrial plant operators, and the removal of carbon from flue gases before it can be emitted into the atmosphere is key to reducing the impact of industrial processes on the environment. With many organizations and countries looking to achieve net-zero...

OUR THREE-PHASE CLEAN AIR STRATEGY: BUILDING A CLEANER FUTURE With industrial operators becoming increasingly aware of the importance of decarbonization, and sensitized to what their processes are emitting, regulations covering carbon dioxide and other harmful emissions are becoming tighter all over the world. It has become vital to monitor, measure, and ultimately report the emissions that are produced, and ideally to eliminate them entirely. By working to reduce emissions, operators are discovering other significant benefits, including process efficiency, profit margins, and public...

CARBON CAPTURE AND STORAGE A key part of decarbonization strategies, carbon capture and storage (CCS) technologies are used to collect carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions from power plants and heavy industry, transporting it by pipeline or ship for underground storage – for example in empty oil and gas fields. These captured CO2 emissions can be used to manufacture fuels, carbonates, polymers, and other chemicals, contributing to a circular economy – this is known as carbon capture and usage (CCU). The goal of both CCS and CCU is to reduce the amount of CO2 that enters the atmosphere. In...

PRE-COMBUSTION CARBON CAPTURE Pre-combustion capture is comprised of technologies that remove carbon dioxide (CO2) before the combustion of the fuel. This method requires a carbonaceous fuel to be broken down into hydrogen (H2) and carbon monoxide (CO), a mixture known as syngas. To make highly efficient CO2 capture possible, the syngas formed after steam reforming or partial oxidation/gasification must be ‘shifted’ after it is cleaned. The ‘shift reaction’, or ‘water gas shift’ (WGS) reaction, yields heat and a gas stream with high CO2 and H2 concentrations. The CO2 can then be removed...

OXYFUEL COMBUSTION CARBON CAPTURE Oxyfuel combustion is based on denitrification of the combustion medium. The nitrogen is removed from the air through a cryogenic air separation unit (ASU) or with the use of membranes. Combustion thus takes place with nearly pure oxygen (O2). Power cycles for gaseous and solid fuels, however, vary significantly. Although there are no significant differences compared to air firing of solid fuels, the combustion process and optimal configuration of the burners are considered to be the most important hurdles to overcome. In addition, the design and...

POST-COMBUSTION CARBON CAPTURE Carbon dioxide (CO2) can be captured from the flue gas resulting from a combustion process. This can be flue gas coming from any pressurized combustion in a boiler, gas turbine, or industrial process yielding CO2. In many cases, the flue gas is first cleaned, with trace components like sulfur dioxide (SO2) and hydrogen chloride (HCl) being removed to prevent malfunctioning of the capture process. Various capture mechanisms, or combinations of them, can be applied, including phase separation, selective permeability, and sorption. In the CO2 capture processes...

SUPPORTING HYDROGEN FUEL PRODUCTION As part of the move towards a carbon net-zero future, cleaner energy sources, such as hydrogen, are becoming increasingly attractive to many industries. Hydrogen (H2) gas does not contain carbon, so burns much more cleanly than – for example – methane, as it cannot form carbon dioxide (CO2) as a byproduct of combustion. Plants that produce hydrogen (H2) are ramping up output to meet increased demand. The purity of the hydrogen (H2) they produce affects its quality as a fuel, and this is where gas analysis again plays a major role. Blue hydrogen (H2) is...
