The Ohmstik Plus is used to evaluate line splices, bolted terminals, taps, jumpers, and substation bus bars. Additionally, switches, fused disconnects, and normally open switches that have been open for long periods, may be measured just after closing. These connections can be measured right after installation, or surveyed after years of service. The instrument is positioned onto the splice or connector so the connection under test is between the two electrodes. In a few seconds both amperage and micro-ohm measurements are taken and displayed on the front panel LCD. The Ohmstik Plus is designed to store up to nine sets of readings. The ability to hold multiple readings ends the need to lower the instrument to eye level after each measurement. The readings taken provide accurate data for calculating ratios to determine health of the splice or fitting. Resistance is calculated by measuring the AC amperage in the line and the voltage drop between both contacts. The AC current in the line assures realistic current distributions through the connection are being measured. This measurement is more direct than infrared thermography and is not subject to emmissivity, weather, current loading, background or other influences that cause infrared errors. The Ohmstik Plus gives utility engineers data to predict a failure years in advance, allowing for replacement on a planned basis, before failures and line drops occur. Ohmstik and 12” Probe
