However, by applying Crystic Fireguard 75PA Excel as a topcoat, it is possible to modify their burning behaviour. ■ Crystic Fireguard 75PA Excel Brush and Spray achieve BS 476 Part 6 Class 0, BS 476 Part 7 Class 1 and M1 rating according to Epiradiateur NFP 92-50. (A thickness of 0.7mm is required to meet the fire approvals) Crystic Fireguard 75PA Excel External Burn Test GRP box before being set on fire GRP box with Crystic Fireguard 75PA Excel GRP box without Crystic Fireguard 75PA Excel Acetone poured in to both sides and set alight To show the dramatic properties of Crystic Fireguard 75PA Excel in a fire, a large GRP box, split into two sections was set alight. The left hand side was a standard general purpose GRP laminate coated with Crystic Fireguard Excel. The right-hand side was a standard general purpose laminate with a general purpose topcoat applied. ■ In-house tests have shown that Crystic Fireguard 75PA Excel can withstand a direct flame at 7000C for over 60 minutes ■ Simply add 2% MEKP catalyst and apply as a topcoat to the reverse side of any general purpose laminate Acetone was poured into both halves of the moulding, ignited and allowed to burn. The acetone started to burn in both halves of the box, but the flames really started to take hold on the uncoated right hand side. The fire was allowed to continue for over 4 minutes until it was evident that the fire was out of control on the uncoated half. The other half was clearly protected by Crystic Fireguard 75PA Excel. ■ Cures totally tack free Results after Flames Extinguished ■ Available in black, white and grey in 25kg kegs and 225kg drums ■ Other colours can be manufactured subject to minimum order quantities ■ Can be used on wood and other slightly porous materials ■ Designed for internal use – the weather resistance is not as good as a standard polyester gelcoat but it is superior to most intumescent paints Leading composites innovation for over 60 years Visit us at: The fire in the box after 4 minutes clearly showing the protective properties of Crystic Fireguard 75PA Excel on the left hand side Results after flames extinguished The uncoated right-hand side is black and displays very visible signs of being in a fire. If the fire had been left to continue, this side of the GRP box would have continued to burn until only a black residue remained. On the left hand side, Crystic Fireguard 75PA Excel provided a passive barrier to block the path of the fire. When the fire attacked the intumescent topcoat it caused a chemical reaction which made the topcoat expand to form a non-flammable protective layer that insulated the surface. 75PA/6/10 Fireguard 75PA A/W.indd 1-2 11/2/11 10:01:35

How does Crystic Fireguard 75PA Excel work? These pictures below show what is happening to Crystic Fireguard 75PA Excel when exposed to flames compared to a standard uncoated general purpose gelcoat. Both castings were exposed to a blue 20mm methane flame for 30 seconds and allowed to burn. When Crystic Fireguard 75PA Excel is exposed to flames, the heat creates phosphoric acid which then produces a carbonated surface acting as a protective layer. When the temperature exceeds 200oC, water is produced which cools the source of the fire and dilutes the flue gasses that form. As the...
