Machining Technology Polygon Turning

Product catalog summary
Introduction to Polygon Turning
Polygon turning is a machining process that efficiently establishes flats on parts directly on a lathe, eliminating the need for a separate milling process. This method is faster and more cost-effective, enhancing process reliability by integrating production on a single machine.
Advantages
  • Flats are produced in a single process on the lathe.
  • Eliminates the milling process, saving time and costs.
  • Increases process reliability with integrated production.
  • The Schwanog polygon system significantly reduces costs.
Process Description
In polygon turning, both the part and the cutter head rotate in the same direction, with the cutter head typically rotating at twice the speed of the part. Each cutting edge creates a pair of opposite flats, resulting in twice the number of flats as there are cutting edges.
Flats Production
The Schwanog polygon turning system can produce any number of flats. The process is tailored to the part's specifications, including outside diameter, flat width, and amplification ratio, ensuring minimal crowning.
Applications
Polygon turning is suitable for non-ferrous metals like brass and aluminum, as well as steel such as 12L14. It can be used for radial plunging to machine flats behind collars and for axial longitudinal turning to create long flats. The Schwanog PWP system is used for plunging, while the WEP system is used for both plunging and longitudinal turning.
Technical Specifications
  • Amplification ratio: 2:1
  • Recommended cutting speeds and feeds vary by material and process (plunging or longitudinal turning).

Cost efficient manufacturing on the lathe: Efficient Flats through Polygon Turning! When it comes to turned parts, particularly in the fittings and hydraulics industry, machining of flats is a timeconsuming process. This time factor is associated with a huge expense. Specializing in insertable form tool systems, Schwanog has designed an impressive solution which drastically reduces costs. Using the Schwanog polygon system, flats can be produced directly on the lathe using polygon cutters and elimi-nating the time-consuming milling process. Application: Using a polygon turning attachment or a...
