Application
The S&C Fault Tamer Fuse Limiter is designed for overhead distribution systems, combining the functions of a conventional fuse cutout and a backup current-limiting fuse. It is suitable for single-phase transformers, three-phase banks of single-phase transformers, and three-phase transformers. The device aims to minimize equipment damage, improve service continuity, enhance power quality, and improve transformer protection.
Minimizes Equipment Damage
The Fault Tamer is an energy-limiting fault-interrupting device that provides short-circuit protection, limits let-through current, and minimizes damage from high-magnitude faults. It complies with Spark Production Class A in Australian Standard AS 1033.1-1990, ensuring no sparks are produced during fault-clearing operations.
Improves Service Continuity
The Fault Tamer provides complete coordination with lateral fuses, even at high fault currents, preventing extended outages. It coordinates with lateral fuses with ampere ratings as low as 40K.
Reduces Momentary Outages
The Fault Tamer's current-limiting action prevents unnecessary instantaneous breaker operations for transformer faults, improving service continuity.
Enhances Power Quality
By clearing high-magnitude transformer faults quickly, the Fault Tamer maintains power quality and prevents voltage dips that can affect sensitive equipment.
Improves Transformer Overvoltage Protection
The Fault Tamer's high adiabatic I2t withstand capability reduces the probability of operation due to lightning surges to less than 1%, allowing surge arresters to be located on the load side without added susceptibility to nuisance operations.
System Voltage Rating
The Fault Tamer should be selected based on the system's maximum three-phase voltage rating. Specific system-voltage and minimum surge arrester recommendations are provided to ensure proper coordination.
Handling and Re-fusing
The Fault Tamer can retrofit into existing S&C Type XS Fuse Cutout mountings. Re-fusing is straightforward, with backup limiters offered in one ampere rating size and fuse cartridges in various ratings to coordinate with the backup limiter.
Components
The Fault Tamer consists of a mounting, backup limiter, fuse tube, and fuse cartridge. The fuse cartridge is replaced after each fault-clearing operation, while the backup limiter is replaced after high-magnitude fault-clearing operations.
Catalog Information
Various catalog numbers are provided for different system voltage ratings and configurations, including options with porcelain and composite-polymer silicone insulators.
