THE SPECIALIST IN LIQUID-LIQUID EXTRACTION BY CENTRIFUGATION LIQUID-LIQUID EXTRACTION Liquid-liquid extraction, or solvent extraction, involves transferring one or more solutes contained in an initial liquid solution to another immiscible liquid (solvent). The solvent enriched with solute(s) is called the extract, while the initial solution depleted of solute(s) is called the raffinate. The general principle involves first mixing the initial liquid solution containing the solute with a solvent chosen for its affinity with the solute. These two liquid phases must be immiscible and have different densities, and their intimate contact allows the transfer, at least partially, of the solute. Next, the resulting dispersion is decanted, either statically (by gravity) using mixer-settlers or dynamically under the action of centrifugal force generated by centrifugal extractors. Each extractor combines mixing and separation operations and constitutes an extraction stage. Optimizing solute transfer generally requires multiple stages, and extraction is performed counter-currently through the necessary number of stages. Environment: Effluent treatment, solvent and battery recycling... Electrometallurgy: Extraction and purification of precious metals (hydrometallurgy), metal recycling A mixer-settler stage consists of two zones: • Mixing zone: A turbine, powered by an electric motor, enables mixing and pumping. It draws phases from adjacent settlers, brings them into contact, and directs the resulting dispersion to the settler. • Separation zone: Static (gravity-based) decantation is facilitated by coalescence grids, and the transfer of separated phases occurs via overflow at two weirs, one of which is adjustable. ^Light phase weirLIGHT phase OUTLET HEAVY PHASE OUTLET Adjustable heavy phase weir
