General Operating Principle
Speed sensors are designed for contactless measurement of rotational speed and direction in challenging environments. They are durable, withstanding high pressures, temperature changes, electromagnetic disturbances, and aggressive media. These sensors detect movement in ferromagnetic structures, like gears, by changes in magnetic flux, using a permanent magnet. The output is a square-wave voltage reflecting magnetic field changes.

Functional Performance on Gear Wheels
The sensors are used for non-contact speed detection on ferromagnetic machine elements, typically gear wheels with modules of 0.5 or higher. The air gap between the sensor and the object is crucial and depends on the object's geometry and installation conditions. Coarser structures allow larger detection distances. Maximum scanning frequency is influenced by the sensor-gear wheel configuration.

Material and Geometry Recommendations
Sensors require a pole wheel made of ferromagnetic material. Optimal signal generation is achieved with involute gear forms or slotted/holed disks. Consistent air gaps are essential. Recommended target width is a minimum of 7 mm, and teeth height should be above 3 mm.

Module Calculation
Tooth geometry is defined in "Modules." A simple calculation for the module is: Module = Pitch / 3.14. Alternatively, for involute toothing: Module = Outer diameter / (Number of teeth + 2).
