Self-Lubricating Bearings - Fiberglide

Product catalog summary
Overview of RBC Bearings: RBC Bearings, founded in 1919, is a prominent manufacturer of both standard and custom-engineered bearings, emphasizing innovation and quality. The company caters to industries such as aerospace, construction, mining, and robotics, with operations in North America and Europe.
Product Range: The company offers a diverse array of high-quality bearings, including heavy-duty needle roller bearings, spherical plain bearings, cam followers, rod ends, self-lubricating bearings, thin section ball bearings, airframe control bearings, and custom-designed bearings. A notable innovation is their Fiberglide® self-lubricating technology, which provides maintenance-free operation and cost efficiency.
Fiberglide® Self-Lubricating Technology: Designed for challenging lubrication scenarios, Fiberglide® bearings offer high load capacity, low friction, and resistance to various substances. They are suitable for environments with non-lubricating fluids and come in multiple configurations and materials.
Engineering and Performance: The performance of Fiberglide® bearings is affected by load, velocity, temperature, and surface finish. They are ideal for oscillating motion and high-load, low-speed applications, with static pressure limits of 10,000 psi (phenolic backing) and 30,000 psi (steel backing), and a dynamic pressure limit of 20,000 psi.
Applications: These bearings are used in steering systems, suspension systems, brakes, transmission linkages, valves, marine equipment, and material handling equipment, particularly effective in heavy loading and low-speed oscillation environments.
Warranty and Support: RBC Bearings offers a 90-day warranty on materials and workmanship, supported by a global network of distributors and sales engineers for application assistance.
Technical Specifications:
  • Coefficient of Thermal Expansion: When bonded to metal, Fiberglide® bearings have a similar expansion coefficient to the backing material, with steel backing at 8.4 x 10-6 in/in/°F.
  • Mating Surfaces: Optimal performance is against hard surfaces like hardened steel or hard anodized aluminum, with a recommended surface hardness of 45-50 Rc and finish of 16-32 µ inch.
  • Coefficient of Friction: Varies with movement type, surface finish, temperature, pressure, and velocity, decreasing with increased load and increasing with surface velocity.
  • Contamination: While capable of handling small dirt amounts, optimal life is achieved by excluding contaminants, with seals recommended in dirty environments.
  • Running Clearance: Close fits are used for oscillating motion, while free-running fits are recommended for constant rotation, with a clearance of 0.0015 inches per inch of bore.
  • Bearing Housing & Shaft Sizing: Standard bearings are press-fitted into housing bores, with special services available for sizing.
  • Fluid Compatibility: Compatible with most fluids, though dry bearing life may reduce, operating well in environments with hydraulic oils, greases, gasoline, etc.
Industrial Bearing Life Testing: Tests showed superior performance of Fiberglide® and Fabroid® bearings under 5,000 and 10,000 psi loads.
Installation: Journal bearings require a stepped mandrel tool for installation, while thrust bearings should run against hard, smooth, corrosion-resistant surfaces.
Product Specifications: Fiberglide® journal bearings are available in various sizes, with specific recommendations for housing bore and shaft diameter, designed to meet industry standards for self-lubricating bushings.
Types of Bearings:
  • Fiberglide® Journal Bearings: Include thin-walled coiled bearings, heavy wall coiled bearings, and sealed journal bearings, used in automotive, farm, and construction equipment.
  • Fiberglide® Thrust Bearings: Include laminated phenolic-backed bearings, metal-backed bearings, and slim pack thrust bearings, suitable for high-load applications.
  • Fiberglide® Liner Type Bearings: Used in applications like valve stem bushings and door hinges, offering high load capacity and low friction without corrosion risk.
Additional Information: Custom sizes and materials are available upon request, with contact information provided for further engineering consultation.

Fiberglide > ή is a proprietary self-lubricating bearing material of woven polytetrafluoroethylene or PTFE fibers applied to a rigid backing. To assure the best possible bond between PFTE fibers and backing material, a second- ary, more readily bondable fiber (which may vary with application require- ments) is interwoven with the PTFE fibers presented on the bearing side of the fabric. Fiberglide > and Fabroid > ή bearings offer 17 distinct advantages overconventional lubricated bearings:1. Many factors affect the overall performance of Fiberglide > ή bearings. Those of primary concern includeapplied load, surface velocity, operating mode, surface temperature, mating surface finish and running clearance. All performance values referred to in this section arebased on dry operation. When running in a fluid atmo- sphere, Fiberglide > Under dry running conditions, the maximum allow-able surface velocity will depend on the applied load and other operating parameters. In general, surface speed should be kept below 35 FPM (Feet Per Minute) at 10,000 psi load or 600 FPM at 100 psi load....
