CD5.243

Product catalog summary
General Description: The CD5.243 is a compact DIN-rail DC/DC converter from the Dimension CD-Series, designed to convert a 12V input to a 24V output with an efficiency of up to 87.7%. It features a 20% power reserve, soft-start function, minimal inrush current, and reverse input polarity protection. The device is suitable for use with batteries and similar sources, offering full power between -25°C and +60°C.
Specifications: The converter provides a nominal output voltage of 24V with an adjustment range of 23-28V. It supports an output current of 4.0-3.4A at ambient temperatures below 60°C and 4.8-4.1A below 45°C. The input voltage range is 8.4 to 16.2Vdc, with a typical input current of 9.2A at 12Vdc. The device dimensions are 32x124x102mm.
Installation Requirements: Installation must be performed by qualified personnel. The device should be mounted on a DIN-rail with specific clearances for optimal airflow. Proper grounding is essential, and the device should not be used in wet locations or where moisture is present.
Input Voltage: The nominal input voltage is 12Vdc, with a range of 8.4-16.2Vdc. The device can handle a maximum continuous input voltage of 24Vdc without damage. The input current is typically 9.2A at 12Vdc.
Soft-start and Inrush Current: The converter includes an active inrush current limitation circuit, with a typical inrush current of 1.0Apeak. The soft-start function ensures a gradual increase in output current, preventing high input currents during startup.
Output: The nominal output voltage is 24V, with a factory setting of 24.1V. The device can deliver a peak current higher than the specified short-term current, useful for starting demanding loads. The output power is 116W for temperatures below 45°C and 96W below 60°C.
Hold-up Time: The device includes a bulk capacitor on the input side, providing a hold-up time of approximately 3.0ms at 12Vdc input and 4A output.
Safety and Approvals: The CD5.243 is suitable for use in Class I Division 2 hazardous locations and complies with UL 508 and UL 60950-1 standards. It includes various protection features to ensure safe operation.
Efficiency and Power Losses: Efficiency peaks at 89% under certain conditions, with power losses varying from 0.7W at no load to 17.8W at 4.8A output.
Functional Diagram: The converter includes input fuses, filters, voltage regulators, and protection features such as over-voltage and reverse polarity protection.
Terminals and Wiring: The device uses screw terminals for both input and output, supporting solid and stranded wires. It adheres to safety standards IEC/EN/UL 60950-1 and requires specific wire temperatures based on ambient conditions.
Reliability: Lifetime expectancy varies with load and temperature, with a maximum of 206,000 hours at 24V, 4A, and 25°C. MTBF is calculated using SN 29500 and MIL HDBK 217F standards.
EMC and Environment: The converter meets EMC standards for industrial and residential environments. It operates between -25°C to +70°C and can be stored between -40°C to +85°C. Altitude and temperature affect output power.
Protection Features: Includes overload, no-load, short-circuit, over-voltage, and over-temperature protections. The device is IP20 rated.
Safety Features: Provides input/output separation and meets SELV and PELV standards. It has a high isolation resistance and low touch current.
Approvals: The device is CE marked and complies with various international standards, including UL and IEC certifications.
Physical Dimensions and Accessories: Weighs 435g and is designed for DIN-Rail mounting. Accessories include wall and side mounting brackets.
Application Notes: The document includes notes on peak current capability for applications involving solenoids and contactors.
Specifications and Features: The CD5.243 is a DC/DC converter with a 24V, 4A output. It is designed to handle various load types, including capacitive and inductive loads, and can be used for charging batteries. The converter is resistant to back-feeding loads with a maximum allowed feedback voltage of 30Vdc.
Peak Load Handling: The converter can handle peak loads significantly higher than the nominal current, causing temporary voltage dips. For example, a peak load of 8A for 50ms results in a voltage dip from 24V to 18V, while a 20A load for 5ms causes a dip to 10V.
Battery Charging: When used for charging batteries, the ambient temperature should be below 45°C, and the output voltage must be precisely set to the end-of-charge voltage, which varies with battery temperature. A circuit breaker or blocking diode is recommended between the converter and the battery.
External Input Protection: The unit is approved for branch circuits up to 50A. If the supplying branch exceeds this, external protection is required. A minimum of a 16A B- or C-Characteristic breaker is recommended.
Parallel and Redundant Use: The converter can be paralleled to increase output power or for redundancy. For redundancy, 1+1 or N+1 configurations are possible, with specific recommendations for monitoring and protection to ensure system reliability.
Daisy Chaining and Series Operation: Daisy chaining is allowed if the current through one terminal pin does not exceed 25A. Series operation is possible for higher output voltages, but the total voltage should not exceed 150Vdc, and safety measures must be in place for voltages above 60Vdc.
Mounting Orientations: Different mounting orientations affect the continuous output power and ambient temperature limits. Standard orientation is recommended for optimal performance, with derating curves provided for alternative orientations.
