CD5.242

Product catalog summary
General Description: The CD5.242 is a compact DIN-rail DC/DC converter from the Dimension CD-Series, designed to convert a 48V input to a 24V output. It offers a power range of 92-120W and includes essential functions such as a 20% power reserve, soft-start, and reverse input polarity protection. The device is suitable for use with batteries and similar sources, and it is electrically isolated for safety.
Specifications: The converter operates with an input voltage range of 36-60Vdc, with a typical input current of 2.75A at 48Vdc. It provides an output voltage of 24V, adjustable between 23-28V, and an output current of 5A at ambient temperatures below 60°C. The efficiency is up to 90.3%, and it features a minimal inrush current surge of 0.6A peak.
Installation Requirements: Installation must be performed by qualified personnel. The device should be mounted on a DIN-rail with specific clearances for optimal airflow. It is designed for convection cooling and should not be obstructed. Proper grounding is essential to prevent electrical hazards.
Input Voltage: The nominal input voltage is 48Vdc, with a range of 36-60Vdc. The device can handle a maximum continuous input voltage of 63Vdc without damage. The input ripple voltage should not exceed 5Vpp.
Soft-start and Inrush Current: The converter includes an active inrush limitation circuit to manage input current surges. The soft-start function ensures a gradual increase in output current, preventing high input currents that could cause voltage drops.
Output Characteristics: The output voltage is nominally 24V, with a factory setting of 24.1V. The device can deliver a peak current higher than the specified short-term current, useful for starting demanding loads. The output power is 144W for ambient temperatures below 45°C.
Hold-up Time: The converter includes a bulk capacitor to maintain output voltage during input voltage dips. The typical hold-up time is 5.6ms at full load (5A) with a 48Vdc input.
Safety and Approvals: The CD5.242 is suitable for use in hazardous locations (Class I Division 2) and complies with various safety standards, including UL 508 and UL 60950-1. It is designed for use in industrial control, office, communication, and instrumentation equipment.
Functional Diagram: The converter includes input fuses, filters, a voltage regulator, and protection features such as over-voltage and reverse polarity protection.
Front Side and User Elements: Features include input and output screw terminals, an output voltage potentiometer, and a DC-OK LED that indicates when output voltage exceeds 21V.
Terminals and Wiring: The device uses screw terminals suitable for solid and stranded wires, with specific torque recommendations. Safety compliance with IEC/EN/UL 60950-1 is required.
Reliability: The lifetime expectancy varies with load and temperature, with a maximum of 181,000 hours at 25°C and 5A. MTBF is calculated using SN 29500 and MIL HDBK 217F standards.
EMC: The converter meets EMC standards for industrial and residential environments, with immunity to electrostatic discharge, RF fields, and surges.
Environment: Operational temperature ranges from -25°C to +70°C, with de-rating required above 45°C. The device is suitable for altitudes up to 6000m.
Protection Features: Includes overload, no-load, short-circuit, over-voltage, and over-temperature protection. The device is rated IP 20 for penetration protection.
Safety Features: Provides SELV and PELV separation, with isolation resistance over 5MOhm. Touch current is minimal under smooth DC input conditions.
Dielectric Strength: The output is floating, with type and factory tests conducted at specified voltages. Field tests require specific cut-off current settings.
Approvals: The device complies with CE, UL, CSA, and marine standards, suitable for hazardous locations and marine applications.
Physical Dimensions and Weight: Weighs 425g and is designed for DIN-Rail mounting. Installation requires specific clearances.
Accessories: Includes wall and side mounting brackets for flexible installation options.
Application Notes for CD5.242 DC/DC Converter:
Peak Current Capability: The converter can handle peak currents significantly higher than the nominal output, useful for applications like solenoids and capacitive loads. It can deliver extra current using built-in capacitors, causing a temporary voltage dip.
Back-Feeding Loads: The converter is resistant to back-feeding voltages up to 30Vdc, ensuring no malfunction when loads like motors feed voltage back.
Inductive and Capacitive Loads: Designed to handle unlimited capacitive and inductive loads.
Charging of Batteries: Suitable for charging lead-acid batteries with specific instructions on temperature, orientation, and voltage settings.
External Input Protection: External protection is required if the supplying branch exceeds 50A. Minimum requirements for fuses are specified to prevent nuisance tripping.
Requirements for the Supplying Source: Avoid additional input filters to prevent resonant effects. The supplying network's resistance should be above a certain threshold.
Parallel Use to Increase Output Power: Multiple converters can be paralleled to increase power output, with specific guidelines on voltage settings and installation clearances.
Parallel Use for Redundancy: Converters can be paralleled for redundancy, with recommendations for monitoring and temperature limits.
Daisy Chaining of Outputs: Allowed as long as the current through one terminal does not exceed 25A.
Series Operation: Converters can be connected in series for higher voltages, with safety precautions for voltages above 60Vdc.
Use in a Tightly Sealed Enclosure: Provides reference measurements for temperature rise inside an enclosure.
Mounting Orientations: Different mounting orientations affect output power and lifetime expectancy, with specific derating curves provided.
