Product catalog summary
Introduction to PARALIGN® Service
PARALIGN® is a measurement system used in the paper industry to ensure the parallelism of rolls. It utilizes three highly precise ringlaser gyroscopes, similar to those in spacecraft navigation systems, to measure the relative position in space and detect misalignments in roll parallelism with a resolution of 4µm/m.
Inertial Measurement Unit (IMU)
The system comprises three orthogonally arranged gyroscopes that determine the coordinate system, allowing for the calculation of the relative position in space. This technology enables the comparison of roll axes and the calculation of vertical and horizontal offsets to a reference roll.
Measurement Process
The PARALIGN® device is placed on a roll and moved around its rotation axis. An angular range of 20° is sufficient to determine the roll's position. The system automatically filters out defective measurement points and transmits data wirelessly to a laptop for analysis. The results are presented in a graphical report, offering a faster alternative to traditional systems.
Advantages of PARALIGN®
  • No line of sight needed
  • Reduces measurement time, allowing up to 100 rolls per day
  • Quick measurement preparation
  • Automatic generation of user-independent documentation
  • High accuracy of 0.05 mm/m, unaffected by roll location or temperature
Case Study: Drying Section Application
A paper mill faced issues with a drying wire needing replacement every four weeks instead of the usual twelve months. Traditional measurement systems were impractical due to housing constraints and temperature gradients. PARALIGN® was chosen for its quick measurement time. Within two hours, the alignment condition was assessed, and several alignment scenarios were simulated. The maintenance team corrected seven rolls, and a follow-up measurement confirmed the improvements. The felt's lifetime was extended to the regular period.
Benefits in the Drying Section
  • Longer lifetime of consumables like wires and felts
  • Higher machine availability with fewer stoppages
  • Improved quality with fewer folds and uniform moisture profiles
  • Reduced waste
Conclusion
PARALIGN® offers significant advantages in roll alignment, particularly in challenging environments like the drying section of paper mills. Its precision and efficiency lead to improved machine performance and reduced maintenance costs.

PARALIGN Service - Service for the Paper Industry-2

Service for the Paper Industry PARALIGN® – how does it work From the gyros as a toy to the parallelism measurement system Moving gyros show a so called inertia and their relative position in space can hardly be changed (pct. 1). While the bearing surface is moved, the gyro axis stays constant and the angle of inclination can be displayed (pct. 2). The same effect is used in PARALIGN®: Inside the measurement system there are three highly precise ringlaser gyroscopes. The same technology can be found in the navigation systems of spacecrafts. Inertial Measurement Unit (IMU) Each of the three gyroscopes...

PARALIGN Service - Service for the Paper Industry-3

Service for the Paper Industry PARALIGN® in the drying section A paper mill for magazine paper showed the following problem: One of the drying wires had to be changed after four weeks instead of a regular lifetime of twelve months. Because of the housing shown in the picture a traditional measurement system can hardly access the rolls. On the other hand, the temperature gradient in the still hot drying group makes the use of optical systems very difficult. The deflection of light near the hot drying cylinders is different to the deflection at room temperature outside the machine. The key argument...

PARALIGN Service - Service for the Paper Industry-4

Service for the Paper Industry The PARALIGN® protocols of the discussed measurement are shown below. The first picture shows the alignment condition as found. The second picture shows the drying group after the corrections. The improvement of roll parallelism can be seen clearly. Before alignment After alignment Roll face length: 7500 mm Your point of view is the operator side of the machine, represented in green. The machine side is represented in red. The blue marked drying cylinder is chosen as reference roll, it is perpendicular to the drawing. For further information please see www.paralign.info...
