PARALIGN - Measurement of a rotogravure printing machine

Product catalog summary
Introduction
The document discusses the challenges faced by a rotogravure printing machine due to increased maculature, leading to higher material costs and reduced machine availability. The suspected cause was insufficient roll alignment.

Problem Identification
The production manager identified roll misalignment as a potential issue. Traditional methods using dial gauges were inadequate for measuring parallelism between the cooling and printing cylinders.

Solution Implementation
The production management opted for the PARALIGN® service to measure all 120 rolls during maintenance downtime. This service allowed for accurate measurement of all rolls, including those difficult to access.

Results
Post-alignment, the plant reported smoother product changes, reduced maculature, and improved printing quality. The PARALIGN® protocols documented the alignment results.

Advantages of PARALIGN®
  • Cost Savings: Reduced spoilage and waste.
  • Higher Machine Availability: Fewer web breaks, unaffected start-up times, and reduced downtime.
  • Increased Quality: Fewer folds and correct passers and gauge pins.

Additional Information
The document also mentions OPTALIGN® smart for laser shaft alignment and provides contact information for PRÜFTECHNIK Alignment Systems GmbH.

Technical Details
The roll face length is specified as 1800 mm, with the operator side represented in green and the machine side in red. The blue-marked printing cylinder serves as the reference roll.

PARALIGN - Measurement of a rotogravure printing machine-1

Measurement of a rotogravure printing machine Within a new print job increasing maculature occurred. Thus the printing plant suffered from higher material costs and decreasing machine availability. The production manager assumed insufficient roll alignment to be the reason. In the picture to the right the compact construction of a printing unit is shown; in total this printing machine counts eight of such units. By tapping with dial gauges rolls close to each other can be measured easily, but the parallelism measurement between the cooling cylinder in the upper part of the machine and the printing cylinder in the lower part is hardly possible. Thus the production management decided to order a PARALIGN® service for roll alignment. With PARALIGN® all rolls can be measured without any loss of accuracy, also the ones hardly accessible with traditional systems. During a regular maintenance downtime all 120 rolls of the machine were measured. According to the instantly available results offsets were corrected by an installation company. In close collaboration with PRÜFTECHNIK experts the corrections were verified and documented. After the alignment the customer reported smooth product changes, less maculature and improved printing quality. The next page shows parts of the PARALIGN® protocols before and after the alignment.
