Product catalog summary
Introduction
The PROTEGO® catalogue is organized modularly, with Volume 1 introducing the company and providing technical fundamentals and practical safety systems. Subsequent volumes focus on specific devices.
Typical and Special Applications
PROTEGO® devices are utilized in various applications such as storage tanks, vapor-return systems, and combustion systems. Special applications include food sterilization, wafer production, and methane extraction.
About PROTEGO®
PROTEGO® is a leading international family business dedicated to safety and environmental conservation, operating globally with a network of subsidiaries and representations, emphasizing high-quality standards and consultative services.
Technical Fundamentals
Flame Arresters: These devices prevent explosions by stopping flame propagation, evolving from early gravel pots to modern designs using corrugated metal strips.
Combustion Processes: Different types of explosions, such as deflagrations and detonations, are defined by international standards. Flame arresters are designed to handle these processes by quenching flames in small gaps.
Safe Systems in Practice
PROTEGO® provides solutions for storage tanks, chemical processing facilities, vapor combustion systems, and more, ensuring safety and compliance with environmental regulations.
Overview of Products and Services
PROTEGO® offers a range of products including deflagration and detonation flame arresters, pressure and vacuum relief valves, and tank accessories. Their services include maintenance, spare parts, and consultancy.
Appendix
The appendix includes regulations, standards, a glossary, and data sheets for PROTEGO® devices.
Technical Fundamentals of Flame Arresters
1. Specifications and Design: The flame arrester's extinguishing ability is determined by the gap length and width of the flame arrester element. PROTEGO® flame arresters utilize the FLAMEFILTER® technology, which has undergone national and international certifications.
2. Types of Flame Arresters: Includes static dry flame arresters, liquid seal flame arresters, and dynamic flame arresters.
3. Explosion Groups and MESG: Gases are categorized into explosion groups based on their flame propagation capacities, measured by the Maximum Experimental Safe Gap (MESG).
4. Installation and Application: Flame arresters are installed based on their protective tasks, such as end-of-line, pre-volume, or in-line applications.
5. Pressure and Vacuum Relief Valves: These valves prevent explosions or implosions in closed vessels by releasing excess pressure or compensating for vacuum.
6. Certification and Standards: Flame arresters are type-examined protective systems in accordance with the ATEX directive and are marked with CE.
Conclusion: PROTEGO® offers a wide range of flame arresters and pressure relief valves tailored to various applications and safety requirements.
Valve Technologies
  • Conventional Pallets: Used in end-of-line and in-line valves, these pallets discharge flow at 40% overpressure.
  • 10% Technology: PROTEGO® valves with 10% technology offer pressure conservation close to maximum allowable tank pressure.
  • Diaphragm Valves: These valves use a liquid-loaded diaphragm for sealing and are suitable for low temperatures and sticky media.
  • Pilot-Operated Valves: These valves discharge flow without additional overpressure, opening fully at set pressure.
Pressure and Vacuum Relief
The document outlines the importance of maintaining pressure in storage tanks to prevent emissions and product loss.
Technical Standards
The document references various international standards and directives for pressure maintenance and safety valve design.
Emission Reduction
The document presents data on emission reduction achieved through different valve technologies.
Valve Sizing and Selection
Proper sizing of valves is crucial to ensure they operate within the full-load range without requiring additional overpressure.
Flame Arresters
For flammable or explosive products, valves with integrated flame arresters are recommended to protect against deflagration and burning.
Pressure and Vacuum Relief Valves with Flame Arresters
These valves serve the same functions as those without flame arresters but include additional safety features to prevent flame transmission.
Design and Operating States
The document outlines the design and operating states of the valves, emphasizing the importance of selecting the appropriate valve based on the explosion group.
Technical Fundamentals
The document provides a detailed explanation of pressure terms and definitions.
Venting Requirements
The document describes the calculation of out- and inbreathing venting capacities.
Figures and Tables
The document includes several figures illustrating the design and selection of valves, as well as tables showing venting capacities for different tank volumes and conditions.
Key Sections
  • Transition from Deflagration to Detonation: Describes the transition process in combustion waves.
  • Valve and Flame Arrester Specifications: Details the components and functions of valves and flame arresters.

Technical Fundamentals Flame Arresters Flame Arresters Development Flame arresters protect systems subject to explosion hazards from the effects of explosions. Ever since methane gas explosions were successfully suppressed in the mining industry in the mid-19th century by the development of the mine shaft lamp with a Davy screen, solutions have been found for making systems safer in modern hydrocarbon chemistry, where much more hazardous gases are used. In addition, filling stations became necessary with the introduction of the automobile. With filling station tanks, the problem of explosive...

Combustion Processes Explosive mixtures can burn in various ways. The following, among other things, can influence the combustion process: the chemical composition of the mixture, possible pressure waves, pre-compression, the geometric shape of the combustion chamber, and the flame propagation speed. The relevant combustion processes for flame arresters are defined by international standards: Explosion is the generic term for abrupt oxidation or decomposition reaction producing an increase in temperature, pressure or both simultaneously [also see EN 1127-1]. Deflagration is an explosion that...

Please refer to more specific literature (especially technical information concerning safety ratings) for the MESG of individual substances, additional ratings and characteristic substance quantities. This information is provided by PROTEGO® upon special request. As the pressure and temperature increase, the load on the flame arresters generally increases. Flame arresters that have been tested under standard conditions are approved and can be used up to 60°C (140°F) and 1.1 bar (15.9 psi). If the operating temperature and/or the operating pressure is higher, the flame arrester must undergo a...

Technical Fundamentals Pressure and Vacuum Relief Valves Valve Technology Closed vessels or tanks filled with liquid products must have an opening through which the accumulated pressure can be released so that the vessel does not explode. Along the same lines, a vacuum has to be compensated for when the tank or vessel is drained so that it does not implode. Unallowable overpressure and negative overpressure will accumulate with loading and unloading procedure, steam cleaning processes, blanketing and thermal effects. Free openings enable a free exchange with the atmosphere or with connected pipe...

Technical Fundamentals Pressure and Vacuum Relief Valves The sealing between valve pallet and valve seat is provided by an FEP air cushion seal, a metal to metal sealing, or PTFE flat sealing depending on the set pressure or on the application. The best sealing is obtained with a metal valve disc lapped to be seated on the metal valve seat (metal to metal). When the set pressures are low, an FEP air cushion seal provides a tight seal. The tightness of the PROTEGO® valves is far above the normal standard (API2000 resp. EN ISO 28300) and hence meets the stringent demands of emission control regulations....
