Overview: This document provides technical specifications and guidelines for the use of Collapsible Cores and MiniCores® in mold design and production. These components are designed to simplify the molding of complex details and threads, allowing for smaller molds and faster cycles.

Specifications:

Collapsible Cores are available in diameters ranging from 13mm to 105mm, made from premium tool steels and heat-treated for durability.
Standard Collapsible Cores offer complete 360˚ thread or undercut geometry, while MiniCores provide up to 70% full thread geometry.
Custom cores are available for sizes outside the standard range.

Components and Operation:

The Collapsible Core assembly consists of a Collapsible Core, a Positive Collapse Sleeve, and a Center Pin.
The Center Pin expands the core segments for molding, while the Positive Collapse Sleeve ensures safety and reliability if the core fails to collapse independently.

Application Guidelines:

Molded parts can be open-ended, and undercuts do not need to be continuous.
Cores can operate without lubrication, but additional treatments for wear reduction are beneficial.
Proper venting and avoidance of sharp interior corners are essential for mold design.

Design Considerations:

The first break should occur at the main parting line, and return pins should be located under the stripper plate.
All undercuts should have a minimum 5˚ draft.
Consult with Progressive’s Engineering Department for technical support and CAD data.

Core Selection Process:

Determine the Part Major and Minor Diameters to select the appropriate core size.
Calculate the Part Undercut, Loss of Collapse, and Total Collapse to ensure compatibility with the selected core size.

Side Mount Options: Collapsible Cores can be configured with hydraulic cylinders and slide assemblies for alternative operations.
