SCUDDING® is a continuous gear generating process that bridges the gap between gear hobbing and shaping. It is applicable for both symmetrical and non-symmetrical gear applications, including belt pulleys and synchronizer gears. The process is versatile, allowing the same machine to be used for both internal and external applications.
Advantages of SCUDDING®
Compared to traditional shaping, SCUDDING® is more economical due to the high number of engaged cutting edges, which eliminates idle strokes. It allows for precise corrections of gear geometry, crown, and taper, optimizing them for assembly processes. The process also improves noise performance through diagonally crossed cutting lines.
Applications and Improvements
- Annulus Gear, Internal Helix: Transitioning from helical broaching to SCUDDING® allows for better handling of heat-treat distortions and precise geometry adjustments.
- Annulus Gear, Internal Straight Blind Spline: SCUDDING® eliminates the need for undercuts, enhancing component strength.
- Synchro Gear with Block-Tooth: Ideal for synchronizer parts, allowing easy machining of non-symmetrical geometries.
Technical Specifications
SCUDDING® achieves high gear quality (DIN 5-7) with low surface roughness (Rz 2-3). It uses a "Fly-Cutter" concept for producing internal and external gears, with tools designed as straight gears for helical applications.

SCUDDING QmS - Quality meets Speed ® SCUDDING is a continuous gear generating process. Technically, it is a process between gear „hobbing“ and gear „shaping“. The SCUDDING process can be used for a wide range of symmetrical gear applications as well as for non-symmetrical gear or profile applications such as belt pulleys and synchronizer gears. Many other, non gear-related applications still have to be explored. With the Wera Profilator machine design, the same machine can be used for internal and external SCUDDING applications.
