By using an acid, the inorganic carbon (TIC) is removed from the sample prior to the combustion process. Moreover, the volatile organic carbon (VOC) and the purgeable organic carbon (POC) are also expelled. Thus, after the combustion, only the non-purgeable organic carbon (NPOC) value can be calculated.
