A TRANSFORMATION TO SAVE POWER Traditional distribution transformers are contributing to important energy losses across diverse distribution networks. Why is this? Core losses are present in the transformers even when they are under no-load conditions; in addition, the load factor is very low UK-wide. Put together up to 3% of all electrical power generated is wasted through transformer losses worldwide. The core of the majority of today’s conventional transformers is made of CRGO steel. When this is replaced by amorphous metal (please see section “What are amorphous metals?” for more...

5 PAYBACK PERIOD ON EXTRA INVESTMENT AND LIFETIME SAVINGS With a typical payback time of under three years and truly impressive savings of both energy costs and CO2 emissions, more and more companies decide to invest in a Wilson e2 transformer. The chart below compares initial costs, payback period on extra investment, 25 years lifetime savings in energy costs and CO2 emissions between a standard CRGO transformer, a low loss CRGO transformer and our Wilson e2 super low loss amorphous transformer. The comparison is based on a 1,000 kVA transformer with 70% load factor (a conservative...

6 WHAT ARE AMORPHOUS METALS Amorphous metals are made of alloys which have no atomic order. The lack of systematic structure has given them the additional name metallic glasses. The first Amorphous Metal Transformers (AMTs) were produced in 1981. They were the result of an extensive study carried out by Luborsky of the General Electric Co., USA in 1978. Rapid cooling of molten metals prevents crystallization and leaves a vitrified solid with structure in the form of thin strips – a perfect energy saving substitute for CRGO – see graphic below. The random molecular structure of amorphous...

WILSON POWER SOLUTIONS 8 In amorphous metal core transformers, core losses can be reduced by up to 75% compared with CRGO transformers assuming that performance parameters like load loss (copper loss), impedance and temperature rise remain constant. The tables below illustrate typical losses of a 1000 kVA standard CRGO transformer, low loss CRGO transformer and the Wilson e2 super low loss amorphous transformer. The Wilson e2 shows the lowest total losses with core losses reduced by 62%. on performance Plus points PLUS POINTS ON PERFORMANCE Load losses (copper losses) Losses (w) 10,000...
