Product catalog summary
Introduction
KS Kolbenschmidt is focused on developing diesel engine piston systems for commercial trucks that meet high power density and torque demands while reducing fuel consumption. The systems aim to comply with Euro 5 and Euro 6 emission standards, emphasizing reduced weight, lower emissions, and improved reliability.

Layout and Reference Design
The design of new piston systems is based on benchmarking data and customer requirements. KS Kolbenschmidt acts as an independent system integrator, selecting components from various suppliers to meet technological and commercial needs. Pre-optimized reference designs are used to comply with future environmental legislation, serving as a foundation for customized development.

Design Optimization
Pre-optimized systems are integrated into customized development through finite element analysis (FEA) and engine simulation. Functional optimization is conducted using advanced simulation tools to ensure system performance under specified conditions. A comprehensive failure mode effect analysis (FMEA) is performed to identify potential issues and establish test procedures.

Project Management
KS Kolbenschmidt employs a structured project management approach using the KS OPUS tool to coordinate engine development and system integration. Strategic alliances with leading component suppliers ensure a well-tuned system delivery. Continuous benchmarking and R&D projects keep the company aligned with technological advancements.

Outlook
KS Kolbenschmidt views customer relationships as crucial for success. The company positions itself as a global partner in the automotive industry, offering high-performance, quality, and reliable components. Introduction Based on current market demand, diesel engine development has targeted the requirement for high power density and increased torque with low fuel consumption. Fulfilling high expectations regarding noise, driving comfort and reliability are certainly further essential goals. The European emission regulations, Euro 5 and Euro 6, which are effective by 2009 and 2014 respectively, have accelerated the development of even higher performance injection and after-treatment systems. To satisfy these requirements, KS Kolbenschmidt is developing power cylinder systems with reduced weight and...

KS Piston Systems for Commercial Truck Applications-3

Design Optimization The integration of the pre-optimized systems into the customized development begins by designing the components to meet the engine’s boundary conditions. The components are first optimized by individual FEAs which are later integrated into the engine simulation. The system analysis provides the correct boundary conditions for the next finite element iteration. The functional optimization is performed with the best simulation tools available today (see Fig. 3) to determine the system performance for specified operating conditions in this early stage of the development process....
