Micro Pore Optic

Micro Pore Optic

Product catalog summary
Introduction to Micro Pore Optics (MPO):
A Micro Pore Optic (MPO) consists of millions of square channels with near-perfect flatness and low roughness, allowing X-ray and UV photons to be focused, concentrated, or collimated through total external reflection. MPOs are compact and lightweight, developed for X-ray imaging in interplanetary missions and have potential terrestrial applications in X-ray, UV, and EUV optical instrumentation.
Specifications:
  • Radius of Curvature: Options include 100 mm, 150 mm, 750 mm, and others to be determined (R ≤ 70).
  • Dimensions: Options include o ≤ 50x50 mm, O < 60 mm, and others to be determined.
  • Pore Size: Options include 10, 20, 100, 700 microns, and others to be determined.
  • Thickness: Options include 1, 2, 5 mm, and others to be determined.
  • Packing: Square packed (SQ) and radially packed (SQR).
  • Filming: Aluminium (AL) and others to be determined.
  • Shape: Flat (_), spherical (R), cylindrical (C).
Development and Applications:
PHOTONIS MPOs were developed with the European Space Agency and the University of Leicester for the ESA Mission to Mercury, BepiColombo. The Mercury Imaging X-ray Spectrometer (MIXS) will be the first space instrument equipped with MPOs to measure fluorescence X-ray emission from Mercury's surface in the 0.5 - 7.5 keV energy range.
MIXS Module Components:
  • MIXS Optics Module Telescope (MOM-T): Composed of two radial optics in series, each with three concentric rings of spherically slumped radially packed MPO sectors forming a Wolter-1 imaging X-ray optic.
  • MIXS Optics Module Collimator (MOM-C): Composed of a matrix of four spherically slumped square packed MPOs.
Coating and Features:
The MPOs for the MIXS module have an Iridium coating inside the channels to enhance X-ray reflection and an Aluminium film on the input side for heat shielding.

Micro Pore Optic-1

PHOTONIS Micro Pore Optic A Micro Pore Optic consists of millions of square channels arranged in a well defined order. The surfaces inside the square channels have a near perfect flatness and a very low roughness. X-ray and UV photons can be focussed, concentrated or collimated by virtue of total external reflection at grazing angle inside the micro pore channels. The MPOs have been developed for X-ray imaging applications on interplanetary space missions. Compared to conventional X-ray optics MPOs are extremely compact and of ultra low mass. For terrestrial applications, the truly imaging capability of the novel MPO technology opens up new and unexplored potentials in the domain of X-ray, UV and EUV optical instrumentation.
