Cryopreservation without crosscontamination risk Biological materials such as cells or tissue samples will naturally change and deteriorate over time. In order to properly preserve them for later study, some means of halting these processes must be used that will not change the biological materials. The most effective means of preserving biological materials is cryopreservation – storage at extremely low temperatures. Cryopreservation has been used for decades throughout the biological and bio-medical research community. he most important element of a lowtemperature storage system is ensuring a constant range of temperatures below a minimum critical threshold. The upper limit of the range should be well below the critical temperature for the material to allow for any effects or compromise during stocking and retrieval activities. For example, the critical temperature for living cells is below -130ºC; therefore, maintaining cells in a liquid nitrogen freezer at -150ºC to -196ºC is ideal. But when lubricant oil circulates in the refrigeration circuit, piping becomes clogged and results in compressor damage. Incorporating a high-efficiency oil separator, Panasonic -150ºC freezers effectively separate lubricant oil from refrigerant, offering a stable ultra-low temperature environment. Highly efficient compressors have been specially developed and incorporated in -150ºC freezing units.
