CEION® Measurement Technology

Product catalog summary
Introduction to CEION® Technology
CEION® is an advanced metal loss technology that measures changes in current density due to material loss. It is an evolution of the ER ratiometric method and provides calibrated outputs when applied to a Sample and Reference array. The technology is used to monitor metal loss and process temperature, and can also detect localized effects and conductivity changes due to surface defects or conductive deposits.

Key Features and Applications
CEION® combines precision electronics, noise rejection, and real-time compensation algorithms with sensors designed for micro-structural and thermodynamic balance. It is used in various applications such as corrosion and pitting monitoring, sand erosion monitoring, and pipeline flow assurance. The technology is applicable in surface and subsea installations, refineries, petrochemical plants, and laboratories worldwide.

Application Areas
  • Chemical Optimisation: CEION® systems optimize corrosion inhibitor dosage in hydrocarbon services, providing significant cost benefits.
  • General Process Management: CEION® acts as a real-time alarm indicator for metal loss due to process changes.
  • Sand Erosion Applications: The technology measures the effects of entrained solids in oil and gas streams, helping to control solids production.
  • PTEC Intrusive Subsea Probes: These probes deliver CEION® technology for subsea use, tailored for demanding conditions.
  • RPCMTM Subsea and Surface Pipeline Spools: This application vehicle provides 360° coverage for pipeline monitoring, adaptable to various flow assurance needs.

Performance and Advantages
CEION® offers superior performance due to its high raw resolution, allowing faster detection of metal loss compared to standard ER measurements. This quick response helps reduce total metal loss and extend asset life. The technology is particularly valuable in sand erosion monitoring and corrosion inhibitor evaluation.

Support and Products
CEION® technology is supported by the Flow Assurance and Optimisation Group, Field Services Group, and Products Group, providing comprehensive project support and equipment packages. Basic CEION® packages include an intrusive sensor, instrument, access means, and data handling software. Detailed product information is available in specific datasheets.

An advanced development of the original ER ratiometric method, the technique measures changes in current density due to material loss. When applied to a Sample and Reference array in the form of a probe or sensor the instrumentation provides a signal-conditioned, calibrated output. The principal parameters of interest are metal loss and process temperature but advanced applications may include others related to localised effects and conductivity due to surface defects, inclusions, conductive deposits or solutions in contact with the electrically conductive path through the metallic sample. In CEION®, precision electronics, inherent noise rejection and configurable, embedded, real-time compensation algorithms combine with sensors designed for micro-structural, thermodynamic and hydrostatic balance to deliver exceptional performance. Corrosion & Pitting Monitors Sand Erosion Monitors Pipeline Flow Assurance Chemical Optimisation First introduced in 1999 the technology has been used to power a wide range of devices including, corrosion probes, sand erosion detectors and pipeline corrosion monitors. Applications on surface and subsea installations, refineries, petrochemical plants and in the laboratory are in service world-wide; including the Gulf of Mexico, West Africa, UK and Norwegian Continental Shelf, Australia, Middle East, North Africa, Latin America and Asia. We are continuously developing new applications for the technology, often sponsored by end-users, targeted at solving specific industry problems.

This is a level commonly found in carbon steel hydrocarbon systems under normal operating conditions. Higher metal loss rates mean faster responses but it is important to measure quickly and accurately at normal operating metal loss rates so that process changes are detected immediately. *may be caused...
