General Overview: The XTRU-THERM
piping system by PERMA-
PIPE is engineered for distributing hot and cold fluids, suitable for both underground and above-ground installations. It features a polyethylene jacket and polyurethane insulation, ensuring high thermal efficiency and environmental protection.
Specifications: The system adheres to ASME B31.1 standards. Service pipes are constructed from ASTM A53 Gr. B carbon steel, with condensate return lines using Schedule 80. Pipes 2.5 inches and larger are butt welded, while smaller sizes are socket welded. The insulation is polyurethane foam with a minimum density of 2 lb/ft³ and a thermal conductivity of 0.18 Btu-in/hr-ft²-F.
Insulation and Jacket: The insulation fills the space between the service pipe and the jacket, bonded to both. The outer jacket is seamless high-density polyethylene (HDPE), meeting ASTM D3350 standards, preventing moisture ingress.
Fittings and Accessories: All fittings are factory prefabricated and pre-insulated, with HDPE molded jackets for elbows and extrusion welded for tees. Field joints are sealed with a heat shrinkable adhesive-backed sleeve.
Applications: Suitable for district heating and cooling, domestic hot water systems, geothermal, condensate return, waste heat recovery, chilled water distribution, solar collection, cryogenic piping, and fuel transport.
System Features: The XTRU-THERM system offers a seamless extruded HDPE jacket, low thermal conductivity insulation, and a fully bonded system. It is available in various materials and sizes, with pre-engineered components to reduce field costs.
Installation and Backfill: Installation requires factory-trained technical assistance. A 4-inch sand or fine gravel layer is used for bedding, with backfill compacted in layers above the pipe.
Pressure Testing and Insulation: The system must be pressure tested to 150 psig or 1.5 times the design pressure, whichever is greater. Insulation should be poured in place at the field joint area and only applied to straight sections of pipe. Field insulation of fittings is not acceptable. The field joint area must be sealed with a heat shrinkable adhesive-backed sleeve, and backfilling should only begin once the sleeve has cooled. All materials for the field joint insulation and jacketing are provided by PERMA-PIPE.
Backfill Procedure: A 4-inch layer of sand or fine gravel should be placed and tamped in the trench to create a uniform bedding for the pipe. The trench should be backfilled with similar material in 6-inch compacted layers to at least 6 inches above the insulated pipe. The rest of the trench should be backfilled and compacted with suitable excavated soil in uniform layers.
Insulation Thickness: A table provides minimum insulation thickness based on pipe size and service type (Chilled Water or Hot Water). For pipe sizes 1 to 8 inches, the minimum insulation thickness is 1 inch for both chilled and hot water.
